I am building an IRS buggy.  I want gears as short as possible.  I have a bunch of later boxes, but I just got my hands on a trans out of a 66 ghia.  Is that a 4.37?  What first gear?  Another question, does the ring gear from that trans have the same bolt pattern as a later diff?  I have plenty of spare parts and switching over to a later diff and sideplates and axles and stuff is no big deal, just want to know if I am wasting my time or not.  Budget is zero.

I just sold my 4:37 IRS trans that Tim did for me a week ago, was for sale on the Samba for 3 months, the Ghia probably has the 4:37 but I don't know the other gears.

Stock first gear is a 3.80 up until about mid 1973 when they switched to the 3.78 sometimes wrongfully called the super beetle mainshaft. 66 would have a 4.37 ring and pinion, 3.80 first, 2.06 second, 1.26 third and .89 fourth.

Might have a 1.31 third gear .  It should have a 4.37 six bolt ring gear with a keyed 4th gear  and Steel forks. It only take about 30 mins to take one apart.

Thanks guys.  So I won't be able to bolt it to a late diff then?  Can I drill the diff to accept the older bolt pattern?

You can drill the diff to match.
