Auto Haus was my sponsor in the late 1960s and the early 1970s. I crashed and burned the Auto Haus car at Bug - In #7 at Orange County raceway. I stopped racing for while and lost touch with Lyn and Ron. I see Ron's kids, Mark Rosevear who works for McKensey's and Larry Rosevear is the owner of Suspensions Unlimited. All good people.

VWTrends was started by Auto-Haus.  The earliest issues doubled as a parts catalog for Auto-Haus.  They were more of a large retailer than innovators and therefore not a very big part of VW folklore.

Keep reading the old mags, they have a lot more information than the new ones do.  Get you hands on some Volkswagen Greats if you can.

Ah, no, that is not entirely correct. VW Trends was started by Tom McMullen and owned by McMullen Publishing for years until the company was sold off (and his passing), and combined with other publishing companies (to numerous to list). Yes, in a way, those first few issues were a package deal between the two companies; McMullen and Auto-Haus. It just may have been a suggestion by the Rosevears to place their catalog on the newsstands, similar to JC Whitney, but I have to believe that Tom McMullen was also looking at the success of Hot VWs, and wanted to get into that market. In order to make this deal fly, the Rosevears had to bank role the printing, since no other outside advertising was allowed. If you recall, after those first four issues were printed, it was a time before the actual magazine came out on its own.

Yea I think I have the very first vw greats and vw trends...I have a lot of hot vws mags when they were just quarterly.  The old mags I think were so much better and had a lot more useful info... Today it seem they have run out of things to write about... all the tech stuff is crap they did 20-30 yrs ago.

Okay, so since we are on the topic of well known shops/parts houses/stores going out of business, what happened to the following shops that they closed their doors?

Johnny's Speed and Chrome?
EMS?  (Used to advertise all the time in the mags)
Car Custom?

well now...since you asked..   johnnys speed and chrome>>both senior huey and carey(jr) saw the future cometh in way of mini truck and small car accessories and invested more time into those areas and finally closing the doors due to many irons in the fire and family differences.    EMS...big jim was still doing machinework somewhere in the local southern cal area at last memory...another sign of the times..huge building cost and opp to move on to a more simple setting.   Car Custom..steve seidner closed the doors to car custom as lagging sales depicted better things elsewhere and went on to selling harley custom style bikes at his dealership and is still a big business guru..the seidner family still owns a large portion of Azusa with several properties.

EMS is Engine Machine Service, Bill Duncan and Dick Nuss. Still in business, same location in L.A. near the airport. If you drive by the old Johnny Speed & Chrome location (Beach Blvd/Manchester and the 5 Freeway), it is now a huge car dealership... And John Huey owned all the land on the corner at one time. No shortage of $$$ there.

The old mags I think were so much better and had a lot more useful info... Today it seem they have run out of things to write about... all the tech stuff is crap they did 20-30 yrs ago.

Thank you for that.

Dyno, yes, AMS was down the street from Fleming & Aronson and ARPM, and on Katella. There was all kinds of nick names for this shop and Jim Durham, but that's another story....

From what I was told about Auto Haus is that VW of A sued then over their "Bug" logo.....after fighting it in court many years, Auto Haus won! ]

But then they had to pay attorney fees as the court didn't award any cash to Auto Haus and between that & other things (burn out?), they threw in the towel.

Thanks VWOA, again....

Quote from: 2tonecallookreject. Didnt realize some of the writers were in this forum... trust me a feel like a jack ass.    I aplogize again.[/quote

There's some past Tech/feature/event coverage/general interest writers on here, as well.
Don't worry, 2tonecallookreject, they've been screwing up for, what is it now, Deano... 40 years?
(kinda makes me think you guys don't know what you're doing, if you've only been at it for 40 years...with a (probably) combined total experience between you, Bruce, RK, Newell, and Mike, of maybe close to, or over, 100 years...)
And really, between both the US based magazines,(I'm including the deceased one) and the other ones that are printed in English, is there any one tech thing that, at one time, hasn't been photographed and written about?
Believe me, if you can find something that you feel would be of value to the "rank and file" readers, not just a "How to replace a Hebmuller piston return spring" article that would appeal to maybe all of 50-60 people, let them know; I'll bet they'd be all over it, or maybe, (and I have NO idea if I'm right, just supposing out loud here) that if it was photographed well, written well, and submitted, hell, you just might find a check from Wright Publishing in your mailbox someday... I think maybe Cornpanzer Conklin and Mike Lawless (among others here on this forum, like "Pappy" Palmer) might be able to shed some light on that one...
Shoot, they used to publish some of *MY* stuff, to give you an idea of how low their standards are  LOL.
Hey Deano, the storm passed, and the crab boats just came back into the harbor, they're having a fight with the local fisheries about prices they are willing to pay for the crab, and the fishermen are basically saying they'll give it away to the public FOR FREE before they will accept a price like that...anybody ever powered a huge freezer with a 40-horse? <burp, belch, pass the lemon and butter, please...> Grin

Auto Haus, Johnny's Speed and Chrome, let us not forget Small Car Specialty, those were the 3 I always visited in the 70's.

I think you guys at Hot vws do a great job at covering the spectrum.40 years is along time and to keep the newbies and olddogs happy is quite a feat. I have learned alot from Cal-look.com & older issues of Hot vws and cherish them dearly.Deano that was great Aug 2007 issue on the  Vp-1 aero wagen.I have always wondered about those.1 did a fly over a few years ago at a  beaver springs meet.Mind you I would never fly one but was always curious.I'll keep my air-cooled flying closer to the ground. Hi Don,
Good to see your doing well! I too often think about the days spent working with the crew at the Auto Haus wearhouse. I don't think we realized at the time how good life was. I do remember your 63 with a single barrel carb and trick heads. Ran like a scaulded dog when someone drove it that could shift! (kidding....I have never seen anybody that took shifting as serious as you Don!) Sorry to hear about Walt, he was an interesting dude for sure who also drove a quick super beetle. I wonder what ever happened to my black, 54 sunroof? I never lost the "bug" bug and would love to start another project one day soon. Retired from Sheriff's dept. and living in Kingston Wa.(across the water from Seattle)

Hey all, here's another name all but forgotten. Tayco, Bill Taylors small shop on Manchester in the LAX area. While not Orange County the South Bay VW's had an icon to call their own! I believe Bill is now associated with Bugpack, but correct me if I'm wrong.
And EMS, while still in business, had relocated about 1/2 mile away. Thanks Bill, Dick, and Bruce for still being around!

Here is one old ad

I had an AutoHaus sticker on my '66 Bug back in the '80's.  Right side Auto Haus and Hot VW's.  Left side had Thunderbird Headers.

Back in high school, I used to love looking at all the old catalogs hoping to build a 2180cc motor with 48IDA's.

New stuff to write about? I thought the Mileage Motor was a good idea for those of us who still driver thier VW's as transportation. I would love to see something on cleaning them up at the tailpipe-there is so much concern for emissions these days, and a lot of people see old cars as major polluters, it would be interesting to see  just how clean one could get an air cooled VW to run with catalytic converters, FI, engine management, etc. I am looking seriously into converting our shop Buses (late model, Type 4, FI) to run on CNG for this very reason.
