Title: Rod Bolts?
Post by: melsbluebell on June 14, 2009, 06:26:23 am
What is everyone's opinion on the use of ARP 2000 5/16 rod bolts over 3/8?

What success or demise have you had with these?

I have always used GB stock rods, never had an all out race application. Turned 8200 rpm's on occasion.

Aren't the 5/16 less diameter than stock?

Hey mel I run the CB rods and i am pretty sure they are 5/16. Run the apr2000 in them never had days trouble, had them in my IDA motor and now in my turbo motor. Last time we put the motor together check the pull on the bolts, they where right in spec.

For the small additional cost the 3/8" dia. bolts are far seperior in load and PSI strength, why compromise, it's cheep insurace

No, more like $10 piece, I think I paid $80 for a set plus tax from SCAT.  I LOVED torquing them to 50 psi!  Stretch was good too.

Mel,

If you ask some of the top racers on this site they will tell you that they run 5/16 bolts.  3/8 is better but if you need that big of a bolt you need better rods like Pauter or the like.

Good luck with your racing this summer.  Have fun !!!

If you have H beam rods with 5/16 bolts I would definately use them, but if you are purchasing a new set I would look real hard at the SCAT H beams with 3/8  bolts, alot of security for the differance in cost. Go to the ARP website and look at the specs of the bolts. I think I used ARP 625+ bolts in my 5/16 H beam rods, comparable to Carrillo bolts.       Mike

My wizard is against using these. I have them bolted and we had to turn a few uptp 28 lbs to get them to stretch the desired 5% stretch. Since this is what I have and what I am going to use am I taking to much of a chance for combo that may turn 8500 and make 235 HP.

What does everyone think?

If you are using 2000blots and installing them correctly, the bolt will not fail. The rod will before the bolt does.

3/8" bolts are nice insurance, but they sure do make the case alot thinner when clearancing for big stroke cranks.
The 5/16" bolts allow 86mm stroke easily.

If your going to run 8500 you'll find the weak link sooner than later!! Why are you turning it to 8500?

I have run 5/16" bolts in my race motor over 8K for years w/o issues.
