Hey all (again).
I picked up a set of Pauter Rodzilla Rods. They are sweet aluminum beam rods from Bill Rathbun. He sold them to me for a song. They are in excellent shape too.
Anyways, they are 5.900" long.
Is that crazy or what?
I would like to use them on my new 2332 N/A drag motor build up. I can purchase long barrels and cut them to make the long rods work. I got no problem with all that.
My only issue is the affects of rod ratio. I know all the theories very well on the subject. Im' asking for real world experiece on this. Anyone ever try a 5.9" rod?

Oh yeah, I calculated some rod ratios for comparison.
Stock 69 x 5.394" = 1.98 82 x 5.4 = 1.67 82 x 5.5 = 1.7 82 x 5.6 = 1.73 84 x 5.9 = 1.78
So, it's pretty close to an 82 with 5.6 rods. Still not even close to stock of 1.98.

The bigger the number the better -- BUT we (VW dudes) have proven that almost any of those ratios will live. It just comes down to how wide of an engine we can stuff into an engine bay. Now take my 90mm engine and trying to stuff it into a 56. Let's just say that there was a lot of cutting involved

Sounds like you got a good buy. I had a set of them years ago only they were 5.7 I liked them alot with the 82 chrank but they would not fit in my block when I when to the 86 crank..
Good luck with them Tom..

Tom, I've got some "new" long barrels at the house. When you get ready, let me know, I'll give you a good deal!

5.9 rods aren't really anything crazy. I have 6.0" rods in my motor. Tom, are the rods new? If not make sure you know how many passes are on them because aluminum rods have a life expectancy. If they were in Bills rail then I am sure they were subjected to a substantial amount of boost. I would have them checked for size before using them if they are used.

Yeah thanks Joe. I plan on getting them checked out. I'm sure you are right about thier use/abuse. They don't look worn at all on the wrist pin bores. They are very nice and show little signs of use.
If they are worn out, I'll just put them in my collectable cabenet. Pieces of history as far as I'm concerned.
If they work out OK, I want to use them in a 2332 N/A drag motor.
If they won't clear the cam w/o major clearancing, I will put them in the cabinet too.
