Hello VW fans, my name is Dave and I’m in the process of building a bug to go drag racing. My original intention was to build a track only car, but after attending the Farmington race last fall, I got hooked on the Unlimited Street East cars.  I got to talk With Troy Sellars at the hotel Saturday night and he was kind enough to answer all of my questions even though he was very busy getting things organized for the race on Sunday.  All of the USE cars that I got to look at were all very well built and nicely detailed cars, all very impressive.  I also wanted to thank Brannon Young for answering questions as well as Warren Skaggs and his father for all of their help and advice.  Gavin Baker was also very helpful as I purchased a few parts from him and he was a very good spokesperson for the USE and all its participants.  I was really hoping to have the car out this fall, but this project is taking some time so hopefully next summer it will be ready to go. I have some pictures of the bug’s progress so far and I will try to put more up as I go.Thanks again to all that took the time to lend their input to my project.

Here is the link to all of the build pictures.http://s1121.photobucket.com/albums/l507/dklock/drag%20bug/

That has always been the intended direction of the class! Great to see builds progress. Be sure to come hang out with us at both races this year!!!

Hey guys, thanks for all of your positive comments, sure keeps me stoked to get this bug done and out racing! I'm glad to be a part of this VW family(thanks Gene!).There is no doubt that Gene and Troy have set the bar very high in this class, but from what I had seen last fall there are no slugs in this class at all! With so many well built, nicely detailed hard running cars out there,I certainly have my work cut out for me to build something to keep up! The question of what motor I will use came up,and it will be a turbo...probably fuel injected turbo.I still have a bit more chassis work to do and a little more "turbo learning" to do also before I get to the motor.

Kevin, There's not a thing wrong with your car! Well maybe it just needs some wax...)

Seriously?  Full tube chassis, Mendeola, fuel injected turbo?  WTF?  At this rate I'm gonna have to hack my car up to step up or switch to carbs!  Just kidding, car looks great.  Where you located?  And before I ran ANYTHING I bought from Gavin, I would have it thoroughly checked out.  You have seen his prior cars?  And how they ran?  Gonna be at Drag Night?  Troy should have an area set up for the USE guys (and gals), maybe a hand stamp to get in Troy?

Anthony, remember it's Matt. Mendy, smendy, bus box what ever? I asked him what kind of car he had when we first met and he said " A black one." See, he's a lot like a blonde chic. Dude we can't put up a gated area. I would have to hire security to keep Gavin out.

I live in New York, in a town located between Buffalo and Niagara falls. In other words,I live in snow country! Not much to do here during the winter but shovel snow and work on race cars. I can't get the time off of work to be able to attend Drag Night, but I'm planning on being at Farmington in the fall. What other races are happenig between now and Farmington that would be good to attend? Now that I'm deep into my project,I've got even more questions to ask!
