Does anyone know what happened to this beautiful racer after it was sold to Japan many year ago?
I only have a unconfirmed information that it was wrecked and never repaired.
Facts anyone?

Thanks!

Didn't that turdeating thief Don Cossey own the fastback first?  I seem to remember reading a VW Trends feature on the car before the Pizzo brothers owned it, but I could be wrong.  Even if I am, I think by all accounts few would argue that Cossey was a skidmark in the underpants of the VW world; at least by all the detailed stories I've read/heard.

Sorry for the harshness Grin  but as I'm aware of it Cossey owned that car at one time, figured I'd throw it out there... carry on!

Don Cossey did own that car. I remember him running it at the Famosa drag strip in 1991. You are very correct in your harshness about Don. He is probably number one on the most wanted list in the VW industry.

Just to give you guys a little bit more information.
I visited the Pizzos with a buyer. Both the guys and family took really good care of us and then after that visit, we followed the car at a race north of SF.
Super guys, super family and a super nice car.

The buyer (in Sweden) always regretted not following through on the buy.
It is on his behalf I am trying to find the car.
If we find it, maybe there is a little bit of hope in buying it and doing a restore.

Right on Keith!! Way to go. You are a real stand up guy. My personal opinion (not that it amounts to much) has changed dramatically about you. I can say one thing for absolute certainty, that anyone who may recognize the fact that Don Cossey ripped off Dean Lowry, when Don very temporarily partnered with Dean (they formed D&D's in Glendale, AZ.) is an okay kinda guy.

I apologize for my rant, as I was there with Mark Reilly, helping Dean to salvage what was left of the shop AFTER punk breath DON COSSEY ripped off Dean, his brother Ken, plus countless others.

As a side note: Yes, Don Cossey did own the Fastback before the Pizzaheads. As a matter of fact, Don was a friend of chassis builder Chris Alston, who incidentally built the chassis of that Fastback for Don aka: Puke Breath.

I also believe that Cossey went to see The Frameworks in Phoenix about building a V8 dragster and the only terms on which they would do it was if Cossey paid ALL the money up front. Needless to say, it didn't happen...

By the way Chris, I was never aware of there being a problem between us! Oh well, maybe I was blind... I hope I'm a stand-up guy – I try my best!

When I interviewed Dean for the first Cal Look book, it was at the D&D premises and I still have the D&D business card Dean gave me with his home address/phone number written on the back. Even then, I could sense Dean was pretty upset about what was going on but Dean being Dean, he seemed to adopt that wonderfully laid-back 'oh well' attitude, but you knew he was hurting inside. He will go down in (my) history as one of the nicest, most helpful people I have ever met. It was a privilege to know him.

Hey didn't that Cossey guy run a blown VW dragster?  I remember it being yellow with checkered flag on the side.  He blew up an engine and parts went flying over the guardrail.  Where is that car now?

I have to agree Keith.. Dean was the "Best of the Best"  never harsh words only thoughtful, valuable input.

Guys!

It is all interesting but can we now close the side topic and see if anyone knows someone in Japan?

I wrote to Flat4 in Japan yesterday and I also wrote to CSP Germany as I have some thinking that they have Japanese contacts.
Anyone else with tips on Japanese companies or names?

Is there a reason you don't just build a copy of the Pizzo car?

Thanks Chad!

That is the kind of tip we need.
I will get hold of Ron.

Searoy, all the locomotion is not for me but my racing friend. Sure I do understand him in one way as there is a lot of memories and feelings to this car but at the same time you are right, we all know enough of the car to copy it straight forward.
Up to now, I have just committed to my friend to do what I am doing, internet lizzard lounge in order to get some facts, to begin with.
Even if we locate it, it might be too much wrecked, or just too expensive to get it over to Europe.
Finding the facst first is for me fun.
Decision and the rest is mainly for him.
I was the one who got us connected with Pizzos in 1992 and it was my friend who was the serious buyer, not me. We went there to see the car and then something never materilized for whatever reason.
Elsewise the car would have been in Southern Sweden.

You could try Shin Watanabe. I believe that he's very in touch w/the VW scene and people in Japan. He also writes for the Japanese magazine, "Let's Play VWs" and is involved with the "Xtreme VWs" DVDs.

Nope.  No luck.
I have written a couple of e-mails to japanese contacts but no response. For now dead end.

To be honest I rather make this thread a "Find the racecar" than a personal search and memorylane of how bad some guys are. OK?
Please park the vendetta thoughts.

Yep, you are right, it was called "Blown Dollars" and Dean Kirsten and I watched it grenade at the PRA Finals at Speedworld. probably back in 1997-1998.
As I understand it, one cylinder head went right past Dean and I, and the other one (this might be VW Racing Urban Legend, I cannot prove or disprove) went up, over the tower side stands, and into the back window of the Rocky Mountain Motorworks rental car..(explain THAT to Hertz or Avis..)
but I do remember when that thing spit parts, there were a few cheers being heard.. I thought at the time, not knowing Mr Cossey's reputation for screwing people over, that the cheers were kinda rude and unprofessional... but now, I understand.
I think that might have been the same race where Andy Costello wadded up the Performance Technology Fastback, too...

I have now located the car in Japan and it seems to be in mint condition. So the "crash gate story" was bogus.
As I have not had any contact with the new owner, I will wait to see if he wants to relieve more about the story.
Thanks to everyone involved and specifically a little bit extra to the last Japanese contact.
So official Domo Arigato!

Piksa,
Car has been located in south of Japan.
As soon as we get some direct contact with the current owner or the car appears on track, I take for granted we will get pictures and possibly more details.
So that is good news.
Now we just wait.

Dave, that manifold did rip out the rear window of the rental car. The only concern and action by dip crap ( Don ) was to reach through the broken window and get the manifold back. He said he would....well you know the answer. My wife Deanna and then baby son Derrick made a quick dash away from the car toward the trailer when that piece of crap blew up. Damn good thing no one got hurt.

I still rememeber when BIG Bryan Robinson almost got it on the other side of the track. He was by Dean when that piece of crap blew apart to the right. Thats the fastest I have ever seen a BIG guy hit the deck. Wonder about Brian....he was/is a good guy.

Just memories.

Nice guy, yes, Bryan was... but did you ever try to shoot photos around that guy? He would block your view clear to the damned 60 foot mark !!!
I was right there, too, Eric-I remember vividly, Deano and I standing up on the ledge across from the tower side @ Speedworld, and not seeing, but hearing, the head hit the backstop... Deano and I just kinda looked at each other, and said "Woa"...Fred Simpson told me later about the rental car....
I remember getting up on a ladder, and photographing this maroon and Silver Ghia hardtop, right outside the host hotel in Surprise, AZ, too... there was some short guy named Darren, I think it was... Cool
