Had the car out again today for some TNT and broke an axle. I cant get the broken spade out from between the fulcrum plates. This is a spooled car, SAW axles.26 passes on car. It does move a lttle but is very tight. I am using a pair of vice grips on it to even budge it a little. Is there a trick to this or what?

Most spools have a hole all the way through it, just use a long drift and beat it out from the other side.

Thank you for the reply.
I wonder if this is the correct way to accomplish my goal here? I will probably replace the opposite axle also as these are sold in sets so I,ll have the opportunity to "Punch" the spade out from that side BUT  I,m very curious as to why the fulcrum plates have the spade gripped so tight.
Anyone else got any first hand knowledge of this condition?

Hey Inspector. Had this exact thing happen to me a few years ago. When the axle breaks right there at the spade, the axle metal probably spreads a little when it broke. I did get a long punch and drove the spade out. Cleaned up the spade area in the spool and good to go again. Weddle will sell you just one axle as I bought just one from them. And replaced the fulcrum plates. These aluminum spools are very tough. Carl

Alrighty, Thank you for the info, Carl.

I did not know I could buy just one axle.

Which leads me to my next question.    Should I just buy the pair and replace them both?

Oh, in my mind, just depends on how old/number of runs on them. I did put in a new set on my car around 2000 and probably have 300- 400 runs on them now. If I were to break one now, I would buy a set and keep the other for a spare. There is no right or left when bought new. However, once you put a load on them, the torsional effect will now determine which side they belong on. As a matter of fact, I broke my gear box last night Cry. I broke a 4.11 first gear. That mainshaft was installed in 1998 and probably has 500-600 runs on it. I guess I got my money's worth on that 1st gear. Time to freshen the old box up. Carl
