So I broke an OLD Diamond axle, & ended up going with a set of SwayAWays.  I have heard of people putting gear lube in the tranny, then drainig it for the races?  I have also heard of running 40wt motor oil?  all sound like ways to free up some HP, over the drag of 80wt.

What do you use?

straight 50 wt engine oil for me.  Seems to work fine for me.  Valvoline racing 50wt is what's in there now.  Been working for awhile.  Drag Race only though, don't know if I'd run it in an everyday driver, or sand rail.  I just stick to 80-90wt gear oil.  I've try'd it all, couldn't tell the difference.  All my trannys seem to work for the expected life span under the harsh conditions I put them through. Didn't matter If I used Autozone no name, It works.  IMO.

FYI, gear oil uses a COMPLETELY different rating for viscosity than engien oils!!

An 80w90 gear oil is about the same viscosity as a 20w50 motor oil. So basically, if you're running a straight 50w motor oil in your trans, then you have installed a thicker oil than what "should" be in there.

I just run a synthetic gear oil and call it good. I've heard of some guys running ATF in thier tranny's, but don't know how well that works in the short or long run. IIRC, ATF is similar to a 5w10 motor oil viscosity-wise. But it's been a lot of years so don't quote me. Cheesy
