I bought a set of CMS 4 lugs to replace a set of 5 lug Ercos (working on a different car and therefore no longer need the 5 lugs). The 5 lugs had slicks mounted on them, and it wasn't till the slicks came off that I realized how light they were. Now I'm wondering if I can get 4 lugs (Ercos, Douglas or CMS) that light. It looks like the Ercos were no thicker than 1/8", and most of the ads I'm seeing for stuff now (and I think what I have with the 4 lug CMS) are 0.190" thick. They feel WAY heavier! Does anyone know what thickness the lighter wheels are and where I can find them in 4 lug? Anyone interested in a trade...4 lug for 5 lug? The plan is to mount my slicks on these and only use them at the track....don't care how they look as long as they're light. Thanks.

Ok, well, I'm looking and still haven't been able to find anyone that sells a 0.125" four lug in 15x5 or 15x6. Thoughts? Everybody has plenty of the .190s...
Is Troxell still around?

Steve, I bought a pair of Ercos years ago in the four lug pattern, There were half .125" thick and half .190 thick. After I bought them, I wish I would have got them with star cut-outs or something. They looked like pie pans. I ended up only using them for racing for maybe one or two seasons, then sold 'em.
Anyway, the "Half & Halfs" were comparable on weight to the late Porsche Fuchs wheels. I figured the light weight ones woulda been maybe a pound or two lighter....and much more fragile. I think you have to be sure you really want the lite weight ones. Extra care must be taken on mounting and even driving. They are really meant for straight line work, and not carving corners. Personally, I'd be afraid of flex with the smaller bolt circle that one really wouldn't see with a wide five deal.

I have a set of the street weight wide 5 star cut outs. The are very light, though I've never held the race weight ones. Does wheel weight really make a huge difference? I'd rather have the assurance of some strength under me. My car is a turbo'd street car, weight isn't really an issue for me. Traction on the other hand...

Thanks for the feedback. The plan would be to have slicks mounted on these and hae them dedicated to 1/4 mile racing. I've driven my dunebuggy to the beach and swapped out street tires for paddles right past the toll booth at Pismo. I figured I could do something similar with driving the car to the track and swapping out for the slicks in the pits (or swapping at home in the garage and trailering to the track). Either way, they wouldn't see any street time. Mike, would you be worried about flex even just driving around the pits? I know they're not that great looking...I guess I could look into something a llittle more heavy duty with weight savings from star cutouts or some other design feature. Thanks again!

I wouldn't be worried at all about driving around in the pits. The highest lateral force you would encounter at the track is turning off at the top end.
But in street driving, with the occasional brush against a curb, and higher speed cornering, I'd worry about it. Mostly the longer term effect when metal fatigue takes it's toll.
Having the cutout thing done would improve the look and the weight.

OK -- For once and all ERCO=CMS --- Walt makes both --- He can make ANY thickness for the halves that you want or willing to run -- He will be up front and tell you what is a street rim and what is a track (drag/super light) rim, or really thick for that road racing toughness if desired. He can have them bolted, welded or whatever you want -- He can make ANY bolt pattern you want, remember he made my 4x96 for the front end of my Fiat. He has a ton of virgin halves in stock where you can go from zero-offset 3" in to 15" wide mofo's -- when I was trying to get something to work under the back end of the Fiat he gave me -- yes gave me -- 5 different halves with different offsets and I was able to mix and match the perfect rear rim for the Fiat and I was able to put a 235x15 tire under that little sucker without having to modify the body work. (If you closely, you'll notice that the fronts ended up welded and the backs were bolted, Something I missed when we putting these rims together-- Walt offered to redo the back rims welded to 'make it right',but I didn't want to take advantage of him and I don't think anybody ever noticed the whole time I had the car) And to top it all off, Walt Sr. and Jr. are both great guys -- Junior is running the Company now but Sr drops in all the time. I love their rims..... Oh, one more thing, he has a selection of cut outs that can be done to the rims if you so desire too.

I think this is it: http://custommetalspinning.com/htm/contact.htmI've got it bookmarked cause my budget for race car stuff is in single digits now (crazy little thing called alimony)! ....but maybe in 4 years (or after liquidating some spare parts) I'll be looking these guys up.
