I think I'd go Mini.  The newer VW's have a nice long service bulletin list, and for what they are, I think they're over priced.  I hear the Mini is a bad little ride if you get the Supercharged motor.  Normally aspirated would be a kick too.  I dunno..........that mini just looks more fun!   Grin

Definitly new GTi.  I work on them all day, (service tech at dealer).  Very well built compared to last body style.  They are made in Germany not Mexico.  The build quality is excellent.  The chassis feels great and if you get the 2.0T power is everywhere.  Decently fast ride that handels well too.  Way faster than a Cooper S John Cooper Edition!  Not a lot of technical bulletins for the newer VWs anyway.  I was thinking about a tricked out Mini also but then decided on an R32 (two years ago) and am glad I went with the R32!!  Just my two pennies.  New GTi all the way.  The new Mini's have they're own problems. One of the long trem tests (can't remember which mag) showed up quite a little list of fix-its for the Mini as well.

I would  go for the Mini.  I good  friend of mine his dad had a PT cruiser and it was falling apart every chance it got.  He bought a Mini,  Has not had any problems Knock on wood he is in his 3rd year of driving it.  Love it the HP is still up there and low maintence all the way around.   He is 6'4 fit in it fine too.   The dad is on his 2nd round trip from Utah to Tucson, to So Cal with the Grandkids.

Good Luck let us know what happens
