i have a 98 that is in great shape. it runs and drives like new. when i asked my friend at the dealership what to buy he said stay away from 2002 and down. he said that they have electrical problems. so far mine hasn't had any so it might be just some.

Yeah, it is a crap shoot 2002 and earlier. Engine wise, they're all pretty reliable, maybe stay away from the automatic trans. Check the e brake cables/ rear calipers, if they don't get used ( handbrake) they can freeze up, cables seem to get rusty towards the back section. Everything else is really just normal maint., ie. brake pads/ rotors, t-belt , water pump- the impellers like to fall apart. Stay away form the light tan interiors, they get nasty looking.

I have not heard of any pre-2002 specific problems. Its all the same chassis and electrical systems until 06. But the auto trans does occasionally have problems. It will leak or develope shifting problems that are only solved by replacement. The 2.0L engines do burn a little bit of oil. But if you maintain it, it will last for a long time.
