I just put in my first water garden. Its just a small one 112 gallon. I thought it would be fun to do. I put it at the back of the property make a nice little quiet spot to relax. I just got the pond in today what a chore to dig a 18" hole in the ground. Im going to landscape around it and put a comfortable park bench. Im going to add lites and a waterfall next. Im curious if anyone one else has one. Im looking for ideas. -Jacob-

I built a Koi pond in my backyard, around 2,000 gallons, a waterfall and a stream, many large and very colorfull Koi living in there.

The drainage swale at the back of my property always has standing water. Does that count?

Do you have a picture? I would love to build a nice size garden but I don't have the yard, weather ( gets in the negatives here and winter lasts 5 months here), and I suppose to have a permit to put on in. -Jacob-

Two months work.... That was just that waterfall.... The guy has three other waterfalls and 11 acres that had to be landscaped too.... The 8k sq ft log house plus an Office house, a toy garage (toys = brand new VT lambo, twin turbo Bently coupe, blown Hemi Prowler, etc) and a 3k sq ft guest house we pretty cool too.... You could say the guy had heavy pockets.... It has been in three magazines and not once was my name mentioned.....

Usualy only need a permit for 2ft and deaper.... The fis will do fine there... Just fload a piece of styrofoam on the pond and it will help to let gasses out from under the ice.... The fish will be dormant and just fine at the bottom of the pond.... Use a good carbon a zeolite filter from Pond Filteration and you'll be golden.... If you have any Fish or Pond questions just E-mail me.... I've been building and selling supplies for over 10 years now...... Use to run the larges retail pond supplier in the nation and teach classes from Seattle to Vegas....

Damn and I mow down all my flowers so I have less work outside. How much upkeep do those things take? They do look really cool.

I can set them up with all but no upkeep.... Most of my customers have ponds that are not more than 1000 gallons.... The bigger ponds that have agressive falls are easy to take care of... A large pond I can get to stay perfect for about a year before they evenhave to check the filter system.... The smaller ponds usualy about 6 months before cleaning the filter.... The smaller pond filter take about 5 minutes to clean with a hose... The bigger ones take about a half an hour (have to clean with water out of the pond for Biological reasons)... I always guarentee crystal clear water.... In the spring every pond needs a little boost of the ECOsystem so some bacteria is added.... Other than that all you do is watch them.... The big problem with pond is, too many hobbiest and fish food manufacture telling people BULL.... DON"T FEED YOUR FISH OUTSIDE.... They have plenty of food from bugs and such in the water.... They will grow larger, more colorful and healthier by far....

hmmm no upkeep? Maybe I need one for the back yard. How much for an 1/2 acre pond? Those do look really cool. I would like that much better than a flower garden.

The liner would only be about $88,000.... That is uninstalled.... You wouldn't need a filter because of the surface area.... You would need an oxygen and ozone generator for it too... That would only be about $40,000 of so for that amount of water.... Lets do it.... If you are interested in Buiding something go by "how to build Ponds and waterfalls" by Jeff Reid... All of the others are a joke..... It was writen for the normal everyday homeowner to do it yourself.... Most of the info is great, some is outdated, but it is easy to follow if it's your first time.... You can build a great pond & water w/pump, filter, and UV light (800-1000) gallons for around $1500 start to finish...
