Im looking at a 1996 Chevy C1500 W/T. It has a 4.3 Vortec v6 w 5 speed. I was wondering has any of you used a full size Chevy as a tow vehicle with a v6? Another question are the full size Chevy reliable? It has 64,000 miles and they are asking $4.970. Any input would be great. -Jacob-

I have replaced a lot of fuel pumps, intake gaskets and heater cores on the 88 and up trucks and suburbans. Other than that they are good trucks. Drive nice too.  Tim

I drove Chevy's for years and their trucks go well into the 100+K on a typical drivetrain.  If the truck was serviced regularly you should expect a long life out of it.

As for towing, you might consider a V8 swap at some point.  The V6 will give you a little better fuel economy, but its pulling will be limited.  The 4.3L is a rock solid engine that is based off the 305 V8.  Timing chains need replacing at about 100K.

also - watch out for paint on those years.  The paint tends to flake off. If it has chips = expect more. Though - what you should see now after all these years - should be the worst of it.

The vortec V-6 has just much power as my 94 Suburban TBI 350, should tow no problems, but they did have injector problems on the early vortec V-6's

BTW i have over 300K hard miles on my Suburban, One fuel pump, One Water pump and One starter...not bad, huh, Knock on wood!!!

The Vortec V-6 is a great motor , if you are going to tow with it , you will want to change the rear end gearing , makes a huge difference .

Nevermind truck sold. Angry. I wasn't surprised $4,900 is dirt cheap for a truck around here. I was looking and trucks with 130,000 miles+ where still going for around $10,000 Shocked I really didnt think it would have trouble towing as it has 15 less ft lbs of torque compared to the v8 (265ft. lbs for v6 and 280 ft. lbs for 305v8). -Jacob-

I got a 3.0 Ranger I will sell you! Just towed back 3200 lbs from northern Alabama. 1200lbs in the bed and 2000lbs on a trailer.  21 mpg down and 13.8 back.

I have a 93 1500 shortbed cheyenne. it had a 4.3 pre vortec. sucked towing my 6x12 enclosed. I swapped in a 94 lt1, tows awesome, burned up 2 4l60s. now it has a t56 6 speed and 4.56 gears, 1900 @ 70 mph tows awesome but pricey to get there from here. I would buy a diesel if i was to get another truck, 2000 or so ford with about 150k

Don't ever tow a 4l60 in overdrive.  If you do get an extra cooler, tranny temp gauge and more than likely you will need some internal mods.

when i had it rebuilt it had a lot of good stuff in it,and an aux cooler. still burned up.

I got the torque at 2000 rpm to pull it, thats where i want to cruise. no problems with the 6 speed.
