I gotta say the addictive nature of air-cooled VWs is something of a difficult quandary at times, as I currently have three. Making the decision to upgrade to a newer car is a tough one, as it will undoubtedly require the sale of at least two cars, and should I want to purchase a house it would likely require the sale of my most prized car. Currently I have a '68 daily driver, '70 project--probably the easiest to let go--and a one-owner '63 sunroof Bug with 80K orig. miles. Regardless of the length of ownership of each car, it's a tough thought to imagine selling any of 'em, but in truth a newer car would probably serve me well, where I currently live.
Anybody else been in this position, and if so, how do you choose or live with the decision you make to let your aircooled VWs go? I've had my '68 for ten years, so it's got plenty of sentimental value. The '70 I've put some elbow grease into, so there's the issue of craftsmanship pride. The '63 is mint, and probably worth the most of all my cars. But somehow I can't get serious about letting any of 'em go...

Keep the '63. Consider selling the others only if necessary. I started with a '68 Ghia VWTrends feature car (previously a trailer queen), then got bit by the need for more speed bug and co-purchased a '63 drag/street bug, and my last purchase was a sweet stock '64 sunroof Notchback. I think I need therapy.

As I see it you can put $10k in to the 70 beetle for the next 4 years and have a car that should more fit your needs. It seems strange to me how people can easily speed $20 plus thousand on a new car that when its paid off is not worth a 10th of what it cost, over putting say $5k in to a VW that is atleast 35 yr old and still around. (I know not for you speed freaks) but $5k a year would be a new engine, tranny and brakes... every year if need be...LOL
What can I say this addiction Has me working on everyone elses aircooled VW's because the 4 I have were not enough.

Besides, any schmutz with a credit score can have a $20K 2006 Thingamajig, but not everyone can have a VW the way they like it. Keep it!

If I were to get a newer non-VW, it would probably be more for the sake of safety and comfort, and definitely wouldn't be a $20K anything, as I simply can't afford it. That's why I'd have to sell at least two of my Bugs, as I'd probably end up with a unknown-years-old Honda or something similar; something that gets good mileage (my '68 with a 40 horse transplant does pretty well in this regard) and is a little more comfy for long trips for a guy whose 6'3" and not very big...if I put on any weight, driving VWs will become a near impossibility :-)
Ah, decisions, decisions...the '70 is pretty ratty, has orig. paint that's burning through with surface rust, something that numerous guys have called me out on everytime I express my disgust for the HoodRide fad, but all I need to do is replace the rear package tray before I can install a new interior, even a cheap stock-style one. Already installed new floors. I never have been good at making up my mind, lol, good thing I'm not a paid consultant!

How can I have half of my (fictious number) of my rigs wrecked and still turn the biggest profit ever? I want to be in that kind of business!
