I'm very happy with my 1.8T (170 HP) Passat...lots of acceleration and 40 mpg when cruising on the highway.  Saw the 1.8T on the Top 10 list for motors (all makes) a couple of years ago.

Our Golf has the bullet-proof 2.0 L.

Not quite the character of the good old ACVW motors, but impressive in their own way!
