I've been lucky.....I've owned several one owner cars. My '70 was 100% original until I replaced the rotten, crumbling carpet with the next best thing from Sewfine. Yet, here I am 9 months later and the smell is unmistakeable.....not unpleasant.....but one of a kind. The door panles, headliner and seats still smell of a different age. And I like it. Who else steps into their VW and is transported to a differnt space and time?

Its an awesome smell. I own a 1956 oval, had 3 ovals and a 58' bug, before that. Thay all had the same distinctive smell. And now my brother got a 1955 bug. Guess what?! Same smell....LOL! . All i need is for my BMW 540i, to smell the same, and i'm set. LOL!

where does it come from? I was told by someone that it originates from the "horsehair" seat pads they used.... not sure if that's accurate info though.

like an old girlfriend's perfume... it's unmistakable. Brings back good memories, the VW smell, perfume sometimes brings back bad memories

Yup...takes me way back to the late 60's early 70's when my mom used to drive us around in her red oval covered with flower power stickers...back then I actually fit in the rear package area to stay warm...way before any seat belt law....THAT SMELL....MMMMMMMMMMMMMM

buster, thats funny that you say that. my grandparents used to own a 64 and they would put my aunt in the package area when she was a baby becuase they thought that would be the safest spot for her....little did they know haha

I dunno...old Beetle smell doesn't quite compare to original Porsche 356 coupe smell. It's like comparing salmon-eggs (fish bait) to caviar

yep. I owned a '75 Mercedes that had the same unmistakable smell when you first got in, maybe that was part of the attraction for me? It turned out to also have (crumbling) horse hair padding over the seat springs.

some bad ideas never seem to go away... I got started rebuilding VW seats as a result of having that stuff get into my eyes, ears and nose in my old 62 ragtop, then 63 convertable. I rebuild VW seats as a part time gig for 7 years, threw away literally HUNDREDS of crumbling horse hair seat pads, including the ones on that '75 Mercedes I owned for a few years. All I can say is that stuff is very comfortable when it's like new, but when it gets old, it goes EVERYWHERE

When I had my seats done, using WW repro horsehair pads, the upholstery shop first covered the springs with a fabric, and then the horsehair pad. That way the springs cannot dig into the pad and start to disintegrate it as easily.

sounds good, but the issue isn't with the springs digging in. I've had hundreds apart, seen the pads in all stages of decay. The horsehair degrades by some other mechanism than use I think... maybe over time the stuff outgasses the chemicals that keep it plyable (that would explain the smell and film on the inside of VW windows), it then become brittle then breaks down... something like that?

My latest purchase, '66 Beetle, has seats redone in foam and the smell is missing from the car. Kind of disapointing but I wont have to worry about the horse hair pokeing me in the back and sticking in my clothes. I'm thinking of putting some horse hair in a bag under the seats so I can get the aroma back.

The fabric prevents the dust from the disintegrated horsehair from falling down onto the floor, etc.

Not to mention that the horsehair padding has much better support than the foam
