I had a JMC Racing bike with all the bells and whistles.  My dad paid plenty for that back in the early 80's.  Used to race at a track in Anaheim.  Did it for a season and burned out.

I gotta go try and find it at the Best Buy or something.  I was more mid-80s era and wasnt very good, but I LOVED that freestyle scene.  Its hilarious seeing the short ramp guys (Dizz Hicks and Ceppe Maes) getting some time on the trailer clip!  Good stuff for sure!

That's pretty cool.  Its hilarious to read so many that were into (are still into) BMX.  I didn't race, but I had the best looking Stroker II BMX'er on the block! Grin  It was blue with chrome Cook Bros. forks, "Tuff wheels" and aluminum bars anodized blue. Wink

That movie is great! Kind of a copy of the Dogtown/Z Boys moviw but who cares?
I`ve been riding and skating since I was 12. Now that I`m 40 I hardly do either but still have a couple bikes and boards. I just can`t get rid of them.

The name does seem familiar.  Anyone remember that cheesy movie "Ride"?  "Just pretend you're in a lumberyard!"  I still ride my auburn cr-20rx(2-pc 4130 cromo/6061 alum frame) to the market to save on petrol, as well as when I need to ground.

Yup, used to race BMX, gave it up when I started driving and finding chicks dig the car not the bike.  Then I got the bug some 15 years later and moved on to Mountain Bikes, still race Mountain Bikes.

I used to have a killer Redline MXII, all chrome, cook bros bars, 2nd Gen Redline Cranks, araya allows, phil wood hubs, kashamax seat, the works.  Loved that bike.

Now I own a $5k Cannondale Mountain Bike, Scalpel 4000 Team Issue, amazing how technology moves.  My BMX bike cost around $700 back in '81, which was top dollar, lots of paper route money.

os-bmx is a cool site, this guy has a blazing site as well, go to his old bikes section -- wicked bikes http://users.pandora.be/jjrbmx/, it's a Belgin site, but he has a ton of nostalgic pix.

These guys were from SoCal weren't they?

COOL!  I still have my 84 GT 24" cruiser, GT bars, Redline neck, Araya and Z-rims, new Comp 3's, the quick disconnect handbrakes (Shimano?), UNI seat, Aeronine # plate, etc.  That sure did bring back a LOT of memories!

I remember getting my first factory diamond back after winning state championships the second
time in 84 when I was eight complete with the yellow diamond back stickers, factory helmet & suit,I thought I was the ultimate.Harry Leary was my hero.
Grew to 6 foot four became A bit difficult to ride a 20 inch.
Now do downhill on a Kona Stab Primo with DEE MAX wheels, monster T forks.
Fits me a bit better, but its starting to hurt a lot more when I stack..

Not a pro ,I was a factory rider for Powerlite in 1980,Raced @ Orange Y ,Irvine ,La Mirada ect.  I raced 16& over Expert & Cruiser.Lined up in the gate a few times a week w/ People like Mike Miranda,Rod Beckering,Kevin Harlow (my team mate @ the time) Mark Darcy & a host of others.Did ok hear & there,I worked @ Peddlepower Cyclery during the week w/ Steve Rink & rode the streets of Orange w/ my friend Woody Itson, racing cars from intersections & jumping off of stuff,he had not really started doing freestyle yet,he was still a racer.Got hurt ,got into cars & that was pretty much the end of it.I have a 24" cruiser that I have been rding lately & I still have fun.It was a total blast .... Though, I wasn't a BMXer...my good friend was an ABA racer as well as freestyler with the AFA.  My friend Rob(ert) Artigo I've know since high school (1981/1982).  Both Rob Artigo and Ron Wilkerson started the 2-Hip Trick Team back in the day as was one of the many King of the Skatepark rider.
I remembered when Rob invited me to Ron & Stacey Wilkerson's wedding somewhere in the North/East Bay since Rob couldn't drive at that time and I had a license and a car.  Got to meet Bob Haro, Brian Blyther, Eddie Fiola, Hugo Gonzales, Mike Dominguez, and couple other pro/experts of the Freestylers.
Rob is now an San Franccisco Bay Area  KGO-AM radio new reporter.
Check out some of his various pics from the BMX Plus/Freestylin'/BMX Action pics:  http://www.robartigo.com/scrapbook.html

My first eal mx bike after my hopped up sting ray was a Webco. From there it was on to 2 diefferent Robinsons including a Scott Clark pro ( wish I still had it ) then a Kuwahara Lazer Lite ( still have fram , fork , wheels ) then I got on a Local Team here in Detroit. We had 2 Factory JMC riders here , Gary Debacker and Robyn Desjardins. They covinced Jim Melton ( owner of JMC ) to start a Michigan local team called Michigan JMC. We all got Gear leatheres a Echo JMC helmet and our jerseys loooked factory except the back had the state of Michigan on it. I got on that when I was 15 and was  given a JMC Andy Patterson. I have many grat memories of traveling to races hanging out with friends from different states a couple weekends a month. We would travel as far south as Florida and out east Jersey and over to Illinois to race in the NBL "WAR OF THE STARS" series. My best year was when I was 16 and was ranked in the top 20 nationaly. That is when the NBL used to give national number up to 20. I brike my leg at Waterford oaks the weekend before the Grands in Louisville and had to sit it out and watch my national number go bye bye. I started racing cruiser when I was 27 and hit a few nationals and made some mains. I blew my minda taht after 10 plus years I could come back and ride. After 2 years I took a hard crash at the Christams Classic national in Columbus and f#$$ my hamstring and hand up and I decided I had enough. It is a great sport and on great thing about being a child of the 80's. I kept all of my magazines from back then and breeze threw from time to time

I also raced BMX  from 1986-1991. My cousins ex-boyfriend was the late Dave Vanderspeck (Curb Dogs) and he was a heavy influence on me. I was alot younger than them but still hung out at his house during the summer. I met alot of his friends and didn't realize who they were at the time. Guys like Joe Lopes, Kevin Staab, Ron Wilkerson, Maurice Meyer, and Tommy Guerrero. I wasn't good at freestyle so I started dirt jumping and racing. When I started racing  (Sunol, Santa Clara, Moffet Field, Ca) I raced with a hand me down Kuwahara freestyle frame that Dave gave me. I gave it back to him and he turned it into a downhill bike. I raced until I was in 17 and over expert and was no longer competetive. My last bike was a 1988 Boss USA team model with all the latest trick stuff. I got it about a month before Dave's death when he was sponsored by Boss. I later sold it for $600 to buy a DMS crank and some 044 heads. Cry

I also met The Wildman Frank Post in 1999 when I was going to a Machinist trade school. We ended up working together for about 2 years. Boy did he have alot of great storys. Honestly I thought he was full of sh!t until I did a little research on him. He was an out of shape 40 year old guy that partied way, way too much with outlandish storys of winning NBA championships and getting any girl he wanted and so on. After doing some googling him, alot of his stories were validated. He got laid off in 2002 from the machine shop we worked at, staightened his life out and returned to racing after 20 years.

Well...although I never raced in any ABA races, I spent a lot of time at the BMX tracks practicing gate starts and clearing doubles to help my downhill racing...I raced the NORBA events all over the west coast in the expert mens class up until 2003 until I watched a young female pro racer from Japan die up in Big Bear...that's when I hung up the racing jerseys. Hell...I even have a "California State Champion" jersey from 2000/2001 season...not bad for a big fella...lol.

Eric T. used to live next door to Christian Hosoi's cousin in the early 80's. We used to hang around and ride with him a lot.  Tony Hawk was just the guy whose dad used to run the skate park.  Got to meet and hang out with a lot of the old skaters.  I still have my old Shogo Kubo Dog Town board.

Exactly when does an old hobby become "nostalgia/old"?? It seems that BMX has now achieved that stage!!

It seems like yesterday I donated my 20" chromoly Mongoose frame and fork with Tuff IIs, Kashimax seat, Race Inc AL handlebars, shimano pedals, pro neck, california lite pads, etc etc.  I lived on that bike in 82-83, raced at our local BMX track in Naperville, IL.

I don't think I have a tailbone left now!  Any former BMXer will understand that one.  Along with the many elbow scars.

I used to take that bike apart and put it back together all the time.

All I have left is some of the old wrappers the parts came in now.  I wish I had the bike back!!!

My bike was cool, but I always remember there was always some putz who may have not been much of a rider, but had the latest Hutch, Diamond Back, Race Inc, Redline, etc. that his parents bought him.  That was annoying!
