Ever have to keep replaying a song because it just flat jams? Or how about because the lyrics drill right through your skin, bones and marrow, right directly into your soul?
Some of the best, IMHO....
The entire piece...."Ripple" written by J. Garcia and R. Hunter, performed by the Grateful Dead
An excerpt from the piece "Sheep", written by Roger Waters, performed by Pink Floyd... "Wave upon wave of demented avengers March cheerfully out of obscurity into the dream"
An exceprt from "Rollin' Stone" written by and performed by Muddy Waters "Well my mother told my father Jus' before the day I was born I gotta a boy child comin....gonna be sure enough, be a rollin' stone"

Damn near anything from Tool, the greatest band of all time.......period. Maynard comes up with some seriously good stuff, and the dude has a hell of a set of pipes.
Except maybe for their newest album, 10,000 Days, which pretty much sucks......3 great tunes and a bunch of pointless racket.

Lyle Lovett - "Lord it made me happy, seein' all those people. That I ain't seen, since the last time, Somebody Died."
Or "Each Christmas morning I sit in my chair I look up to the Angels that float in the Air, Some look Down upon me, some sit at my side They tell me that Jesus he said to say "Hi".

Never listened to much non-Misfits Danzig.... But I gotta say, Danzig's a genius of the macabre.....yeah, songs like Skulls, Die Die my Darling, Teenagers from Mars, We are 138....all classics.

Tool's song "Eulogy" from their 3rd album AEnima, most would think its blatently about Jesus.......I did for a long time......but it aint. Its about L. Ron Hubbard, that cheesey freak who is the "brains" behind Scientology. Tool are masters at making it appear as though the song is about something simple, but there is quite a different meaning behind most of it. I dont agree with some of their message, but you just cant beat the music. Danny Carey on the drums? Pfffft, get outta here. That dude is the absolute baddest drummer ever to hold a pair of sticks.

That's what I have always found so intriguing about Roger Waters and his lyrics. They are the work of a genius. Many would think one simple thing about many of Floyd's songs, like "yeah man, get stoned and trip...", but in reality, the songs are about much more universal themes that we all can relate to, and have much more prosaic intelligence within them. Much of the Waters' driven Floyd work is about just how badly humans treat one another, and how the effects can make for some real social maladies.People love the song "Comfortably Numb" and think it's about getting high on something....but it's not. It's about getting "fed up" with the pressures of life, and shutting down, and not letting the effects of it all penetrate.

i'm finding the more i listen to candlebox, the more impressed i am with their drummer (Scott Mercado). between his choices of rims/skins/brass to his choices of rythms, i am completely impressed. i hope that someday i can do what he did with my pedals!!!! man, that group can do it! the song, "Rain" is sooooo good, i can put it on repeat for an hour straight and not grow tired.

How can someone like Erik the Red have the same favorite band as me? Well, I've never met a tool fan I actually liked, so I should'nt be too suprised. Saw them at Upper Darby in May. Extreme, but I agree with the sentience that the gig was a bit short and the bass a bit overwhelming. Not that anyone cares but here's my list of tool favorites: Albums: 1. ÆNIMA Songs: 1. Third eye(so good, I very rarely listen to it) 6.eulogy 2.Lateralus 2.46&2 7.Eon blue apocalypse(yes) 3.opiate w/ ænima/salival extras 3. no quarter cover 8.The patient 4.10000 days 4. pucrap 9.D/R/T 5. Undertow 5.The grudge 10.Stinkfist Oh yeah, I seriously doubt that Eulogy is about any single person( although jesus and hubbard , turds that they were, can definatly fit if you want them to). Most tool songs were crafted for listeners to relate to and utilize. 10000 days fell a bit short because it gets a little too Maynard-personal in some parts. The musicianship is as good as or better than it ever was.
Other great lyricists/ bands: Fields of the nephilim(Carl McCoy)- You're not worthy Anubis Spire- I have never heard a better guitarist. Fripp, Jones, Hendrix, Zappa, etc. are incredible; i'm not sure that there is a word for Bill MacKechnie. The rare lyric is always profound. King Crimson- Necessary. Frank Zappa- It eventually comes together with excentrifugal forz. Hendrix- Electric Ladyland was his musical epitome, Axis his lyrical. Band of Gypsies was muddled by Cox and Miles. Pink Floyd is the best band of the black school.

Not to turn this into a "Tool" thread, but............. How can someone like Erik the Red have the same favorite band as me? Yeah, that part left me alittle perplexed as well. Well, I've never met a tool fan I actually liked, so I should'nt be too suprised. Im certainly not. Saw them at Upper Darby in May. Ive seen them 3 times, first at the Shoreline Ampitheater in Mountain View on the "AEnima" tour (the best concert Ive EVER been to), the second time at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento (the acoustics sucked, kinda ruined it), and most recently at Arco Arena in Sac. Not that anyone cares but here's my list of tool favorites: Albums: 1. ÆNIMA 2.Lateralus 3.opiate w/ ænima/salival extras 4.10000 days 5. Undertow I agree on #1, but then your list goes to hell. It should read............ #1 AEnima (I dont know how you stick the A and E together like that) #2 Undertow #3 Lateralus #4 Opiate #5 10,000 Days There is not a bad song on AEnima, that album is friggin' incredible.......not only the bset Tool album, but the best album ever from any band in history. Undertow is the last album with Paul D'Amour on bass, and although the sound is quite similar now with Justin Chancellor, Undertow is "og Tool"...........and it rocks the shazzbot--- "Sober" is still one of the greatest songs they ever did, even if it was overexposed. Lateralus has a BUNCH of great stuff, but they started to get alittle weird on that one. Opiate was their first album, and the recording quality leaves some to be desired (remember, they had only played live 4 TIMES before they were signed and this album was cut, so its to be expected. Still great though, even if only 6 songs.) And now 10,000 Days, which has exactly 3 great songs, 2 ok so-so songs, and a bunch of artsy-fartsy noise........NOT up to Tool standards, in my opinion. Dont get me wrong, the talent is there regardless--- but most of it seems too much "A Perfect Circle" and not enough "Tool". I dont know how I could possibly make a favorite songs list, there are just too many great ones--- but Stinkfist, Eulogy, and AEnima have to be near the top of that list (notice all 3 from AEnima). I seriously doubt that Eulogy is about any single person( although jesus and hubbard , turds that they were, can definatly fit if you want them to). I think its great that you call Jesus a "turd". Just fantastic. Know why? Cuz now I like you even less, which is a feeling I enjoy most likely better than the elation brought on by a 250 oz strawberry shake. And while I place you in a class 18 levels below L. Ron Hubbard, I can agree with your idea that Tool songs can be determined in a number of ways. For example, Ive even heard that "Eulogy" was written about Tool's first bass player. For anyone who has never experienced Tool, go buy AEnima and you'll "get it". And as a drummer, I can tell you.........you'll never hear a better, more technical, more advanced drummer than Danny Carey. The dude holds two Masters Degrees, and get this....... he assigns each drum and cymbal a specific value, and plays by mathematical code and equasion. Yeah, I dont get it either.

For me, it's pretty much anything by The Clash. Songs that in my opinion, flat out jam would have be: -Know Your Rights -Car jamming -Clampdown -White Riot -Londons burning -Rock the casbah -Police on my Back (Just to name a few) Lyicly, one of my fav's would propably be in The Guns of Brixton: "When they kick at your front door How you gonna come? With your hands on your head Or on the trigger of your gun" "Shot down on the pavement Waiting in death row His game is called survivin' As in heaven as in hell"

I will walk among your dreams When you think you are asleep The invatation of your mind Beckons me to your sin
That song actualy freaks me out. I dont let others hear me listen to it and say my prayers afterwards. Heart of the Devil has the same effect. I have all of Danzigs music except for the solo stuff between Black Acid Aria and Circle of Snakes. I like Samhain but still cant get into Misfits. I sent VeeDubHotRod copies of my Samhain set in exchange for his Misfits set. Then he started talking about Black Flag, Mr. Bungle and other bands. I wanted copies of all that stuff but he disapeared after that.
I would be very interested in oranizing a music swap ring on this forum. I like paying for music but I dont see anything wrong with trading a copy of something you paid for for a copy of something I paid for.
I'm a pretty big TOOL fan also. I used to work with a woman and we couldnt stand each other untill one day I brought in a radio and was listening to TOOL. After that we got along great.
"Sober" is the best song ever written. I get goose bumps from start to finnish every time I listen to it.
Eric and Brian, I love the drums in "unsung" by Helmet. If you havent heard it download it today.
The drums in "Youth of the Nation" by POD is great to. If you can find a recording of their performance on The Late Show its well worth the search. The drums were alotmore dominant than the studio version and the childrens choir added alot to the song as well.

Eric and Brian, I love the drums in "unsung" by Helmet. If you havent heard it download it today. I can do ya one better than downloading it............in my last band, Shallow, we covered it. I can tell you, that while it may sound good, its not technical at all, very simple to play the drums on that track. I probably played the song at least 15 times for a live audience, and it was much easier to play than most of our original stuff.

And for the record, we also covered Sober, which is much more difficult in parts than Unsung, we covered Blind from Korn, we did Beautiful Oblivion from Eve 6, Sugar from System of a Down, and a few others. I hated covers, much rather play my own stuff than copy someone elses.

I have a 6 pc Ludwig Rockers kit, 5-ply maple, and a whole gaggle of cymbals, most of them Sabian except my hats and the ride. I also have a DW 7000 double bass pedal, which is quite nice. I aint touched em once in almost 3 years now, stacked up in the garage making a nice home for daddy longlegs.

Kind of showing my age here, but the early Foreigner albums ROCKED! I especially like the line from Double Vision: "That Double Vision always seems to get the best of me," always liked the way that one rolls.

any thing by Cream, band that got me into the blues, led to clapton, blues breakers, muddy, john lee, howlin, buddy, etc, don't care for much of the recent clapton, the cream reunion was pretty cool and they still have their chops almost 40 years later, hendrix, what more can you say. still like the band of gypsy show on 69/70 new years. there was a blues cd put out 10 or so years ago that is great, which then led to the voodoo chile, best guitarist of all time SRV stevie ray vaugh, saw him twice, actually recorded one of the show with the TBirds (with brother jimmie) opening the show.... Jimmie Thackery, seen a bunch of times starting in oct 1978 when he was with the Night Hawks. seen him finish a few of the shows with Star Spangled Banner ala hendrix, actually probably done better than hendrix's woodstock version. lots of neil young from all eras...finally saw him a couple of years ago more recently.....lucinda williams, seen her 4 times, essence, "just want you to get me F***ed up" anything by steve earle, seen him 4 or 5 times, great stories, whether country, blue grass or rock, 2 songs that get me dancing (and i never dance) with my wife at midnight fueled by an eveing of tequila, beer and wine, "copperhead road" and "gallway girl". tanney town, ashes to ashes (not the deads) amerika ver 6.0, CCKMP, The Unrepentant, I feel Alright, , and as i said in another post a song he wrote in ireland when he was told that his best and worse influence, Townes Van Zant died, "Fort Worth Blues" line of ...."they shut down all the honky tonks tonight" even better is when you see it live and he says "I'll see you when i get there mistro"

everyone knows Bad Religion is the best band ever, I have loved them for 12 years.
"And did those feet in ancient times Trod on america's pastures of green? And did that anthropocentric god Wane with their thoughts and beliefs all unseen?
I don't think so, he's up there with the others laying low, Vying with those, who you've traded your life to to bless your soul,
Have they told you how to think, Cleansed your mined of sepsis and autonomy? Or have you escaped from scrutiny, And regaled yourself with depravity?
Now we all see, 'religion is just synthetic frippery, Unnecessary in our expanding global cultural efficiency'
Now we all fear this impasse we have built to our future (ever so near), Ever so near, and oh so austere"
