My wife's car has had a funk to it for some time now.   She downplays it, says it's because the carpet is wet and mildew-y.  The smell was like a punch in the face to me, but she didn't seem very concerned about it, and I'm rarely in her car so...who cares?

Well, the other day I was installing a trailer hitch on her car.  It required dropping the spare tire.  The car is a station wagon and to drop the spare you have to pull up the carpet in the rear cargo area and turn a bolt...blah, blah, blah.  I was clearing out the assorted junk she has accumlated back there and came across a plastic grocery bag.  The bag had three acorn squash and a two packages of ground turkey...and the receipt from Oct, 2009.  The squash had nearly liquified and the turkey, while green, had thankfully remained sealed in their styrofoam trays.  I oh-so carefully removed the bag from the car and disposed of it.   My first thought was Are you f**king kidding me? My second thought was I'm going to get some mileage out of this!  My third thought was Bah, why even bother?

If the stink lingers I recommend coffee grounds or a dryer sheet in a container.

Works on musty, stinky old German cars too.

One of the worst smells I had to deal with was old spilled milk. Did you ever see the episode of Mythbusters (LOVE that show) where they tested the myth that you couldn't get an offensive smell out of a car (a la Seinfeld) and sell it? I recall they bought an old Corvette and put some dead pigs in it for several days in the sun.
