Looking at 96 ford 3/4 ton xtra cab truck. It is well cared for, one owner. Has 320k miles on it. Needs tires, traany replaced about 150 k miles ago. It is turboed. Not sure if 2 wd or 4 wd. I haven't looked at it yet.
They want 3k cash, I'm thinking about offering 2500 depending on concensus.
I just want it to tow an enclosed trailer to vegas, fontuky, etc
Thoughts?

I have seen the 7.3l turbo diesel go for over 500,000mi's and still be in good shape. An easy check to do on the engine is to pull the intake air tube off and get a look at the turbo- if the blades are chewed (either worn smooth or jagged) then most-likely the engine is shot.

So far the 7.3 is The Only motor that ford has put in there pick/up's that was worth a damn I personnallly would stay away from anything with a powerJoke for a Motor But if your stuck on them check it over Really Good before you buy it

Atleast if Ford builds it and it's a complete screw up they can't blameit on anyone. The hole sick'0 (6.0L) thing was bad & was not all internationals fault. The good thing is DeanN is not looking at a 6.0. Also, the 6.4L has not had any major issues & has been out since '06.

Don't know what rock you live under man but the 6.4 is a Worse Pile then the 6.0 is the 6.4 you have to pull the cab just to work on the motor due to Turbo's being under the cab I did MY Research and thats Why I bought a Dodge 6.7 and also had a 5.9 dodge both ran Without Breaking down or blowing the Rad like Ford does .And Yes he's looking at a 7.3 with Major MIles on it I would Deffently look at a different truck before I would buy that 1 or atleast buy 1 with less miles .

True on the cab removal for alot of things (the turbos can be removed without pulling the cabs, our diesel guy has done them). They aren't having as many of the problems as the 6.0 though. We see many (we have 2 diesel dept's and they both are slammed with work) 6.0l with egr coolers, oil coolers, and head gasket issues, not the 6.4L.

I got certified to work on the 6.0l diesels in 2004 when we got so backed up on them they had to do something. When I took the class I couldn't believe the number of guys getting certified to work on these things should have there hands slapped and there tools taken away from them. I believe that the biggest issue with them is the "techs" working on them. They are not like the old diesels with mechanical fuel injections and you could run them until they were dust- the new (emmision controlled) diesel's are complicated, finicky, & tempermintal- maintenance is huge on them and they require someone with the ability to work on them.

The next generation diesel's will be even worse- they will be required to have smog checks- more money for me though, so I'm not gonna complain.
