I just watched this rock documentary. I love the old footage, lots of cars in it too and scenes of the motor city, great for any fans of 60's music. I saw Rob Tyner at a small bar back in the late eighties fronting an indie girl band from Detroit called the Vertical Pillows and didn't realize that he died in 91 right after I saw him. Unforgettable guy.

Ya, I saw the dvd at my video store and wanted to see it, and then my friend loaned me a DVD-R copy. He gave me a couple more that I'll watch soon, Ramones Raw, and Sounds of the 666ties.

OK, an update, I watched the Ramones RAW movie last night. Great stuff! Even though I wasn't the biggest fan, I still had a 90 minute cassette that I had all three first albums recorded onto it including all of the songs! That got plenty of rotation on the old Pioneer cassette deck in my 72 Bus. It's mostly a touring movie showing them on the road with amateur footage from the different countries, and of course lots of concert footage. They sure were an enduring band, ok, so one more vid to go!

Oh yeah, the first three Ramones albums are the three to own anyway. Man, I spent most of my teen, post-teen, twenties and a lot of my thirties enjoying the buzz sawing of "Judy is a Punk", "Carbona, not Glue" and "Teenage Lobotomy." Nothing quite like the Ramones to help you not take life too seriously. Always loved Johnny's style of stumming his Mosrite. I gotta check that documentary out.

I watched most of the endless "Sounds of the 666ties" last night. It's a loose collection of "videos" from the mid sixties. Looks like pre Sargeant Pepper, pre 68, pre flower power stuff. More like "summer of hate 1966". The Count V, Psychotic Reaction, with plenty of lip-synching, gogo girl dancing action. Mostly European films, maybe the Germans were some of the few to save these valuable tapes. But 13th Floor Elevators were on there (later to become ZZ Top). Them, Van Morrison from 1967, Pretty Things, Yardbirds, Electric Prunes, Love (from Cali.), The Leaves. The quality is horrendous, with most of the video in black and white, with plenty of cut off pieces, etc., but they didn't have much to work with. It includes segments from Euro 60's movies featuring these classic bands, very interesting stuff!

Hmmmm....I guess I could sit through that. From the 60's I pretty much enjoy the Warlocks (the Dead before they were the Dead), then of course the early G Dead, Beatles, the Band, but then the genre of the MC5's, the Stooges, the Velvet Underground's....and at the dawn of the 70's, the apocalyptic sounds of Black Sabbath....all good stuff.

Something that was in theatres a few years back....that you might enjoy, I did....was Festival Express....the Canadian train trip from 1969 or 1970.....Janis, The Band, the Dead, Buddy Guy.....all goin' cross country together to play small shows in Canada. Lots of awesome footage of all the bands, the footage of Janis is especially bone chilling. And the little, young Buddy Guy jumping all over the place.....very cool.
In fact, I'm going to see if Netflix has it, so I can watch it again this weekend.

Yes, I remember the hype about that movie but haven't seen it yet. Randy Bachman of The Guess Who is now on Saturday nights with a show called Randy's Vinyl Tap. He was on that train and talked about it quite a bit. And his memory is almost photographic, he also mentioned that was allergic to smoke so that helped I would think. His wife is on the show sometimes too and they both get going telling road stories. Unbelievable how many people he's played with and still keeps in touch with. Last Saturday the show was all on Jimi Hendrix and where his guitar style came from, 2 hours worth, quite interesting esp with Randy playing his own guitar live in the studio to demonstrate what he was trying to explain. Worth searching out on your satellite setup, I get it on the radio locally, but it should be on http://www.cbc.ca/listen/streams/r1_toronto_32.html as well to listen to thru the internet.

I bought the Festival Express about a year ago. I can burn you a copy if you want.
