As it says above really, anyone on here a school teacher? I teach Design and Technology (Graphic Products is my specialty) to 11 - 18 year olds here in the UK, and I was wondering about job opportunities in California. Basically, how does your school system work, and how short of teachers are you? In the UK D&T is a shortage subject, but the lure of sun and less rusty cars is tempting me... Wink

Composites, Fiberglass & Plastics ROP (Regional Occupational Program, free Calif. job training for students 16 years and older & adults too...) teacher here.

There is always room for more Great teachers in Calif. and as soon as the terminator is kicked to the curb, school budgets will improve for more teachers and supplies. When he first came into office and took the school budgets, I  had to go 1 3/4 years with less than $400 in school paid supplies. Have you ever priced out composites & plastic raw materials. I worked around it but it took lots more of my time finding companies to donate to my program, and the Plastics industry came in to help me out 100%!

On my www.compositeforum.werksberg.com I have an "educators exchange" section for teachers to work together with anything school related.

A fellow teacher told me about a couple of sites for teaching positions in So. Calif area but I have not try looking at them yet, but:
www.orgdept.ed
www.edjoin.org

But I'll try and get the correct links for you here soon.

Nope, none!  Sorry, California's full, no more room! All the rust-free cars are gone... nothing to see here...  Grin

Any particular reason to focus on CA?  There's alot of CA, too.

Yeah ca is kinda spread out ... England , if a state of the US would rate about number 31 i think ... California is about 3 times the size....There is even talk about spliting CA into 2 states ... And it ain't all sun ...Some of it has snow...BUT,  you hafta drive at least 4-5 hours to get from the beach to snow country...And like Turtle said, NO MORE VWs LEFT  ALL GONE!!!...  On another note, Yes we can always use more good teachers... But ya gotta learn English.... Strike that ... Espanol....

My wifes a 2nd grade teacher.  I think even for upper grades (13-18), to subsitute teach all you need to do is take the CBEST test.  Full time (out of state/country educated) teachers need to take the MSAT.  Not completely sure about what tests to become fully credintialed but there's a crapload (California term for a heap or a whole bunch) of testing involved for the amount of pay.   Do yourself a favor, get your Masters and teach at a Jr. College.

To teach ROP "Regional Occupation Program": 5 years in that industry and a couple of college classes and get paid $40 per hour of teaching in the classroom (not all the hours of prep, grading, attendance, etc...). No benefits but I get pay sick leave and my wife (also a ROP banking teaching but in Santa Ana instead of GG) doesn't get pay sick leave!

But I get access to a composite shop to make things for my race car and other$ too! Roll Eyes

Cool, thanks for your help guys!

Why am I looking to move abroad? Just thinking of where I am in my life right now, late 20's, single, good wage, just about to sell the house I bought with my ex, but getting itchy feet! I've been at my current school for four years, and I'm planning on being here for a fifth, but it's best to do a bit of research before throwing yourself right into something! And being the birthplace of Cal Look and VW tuning is something of a draw too... It might come to nothing but it's best to have a look.

My wife is an itinerant music teacher so she knows a few full timers. They sure have the life. One couple we know where the guy is looking to retire at his early 50s and looking for something to do, and he's an AV guy at a school, she's an art teacher, and they're not suffering at all. Another teaching couple don't have kids and spend the whole summer bumming around here, there, Europe, floating down some river in Austria, hanging around seedy bars in Australia, smoking joints in Amersterdam. They have the best pension plan anywhere (they own the Leafs hockey team, etc.), with a super strong union.

As Isaac said, I'm a school teacher.  I teach computer technology at an elementary school in Las Vegas, NV.  (Clark County School District)  We have a HUGE teacher shortage, and are looking to hire 2000 new teachers for the 06-07 school year.  The salary sucks, but the free time is great, as I am a family man with a daughter.  It allows you to coach sports, go to their performances, and generally be involved.  If you'd like to view employment opportunities in Vegas, go here: www.ccsd.net/jobs (salary pay scale and application info is listed there.)

The problem with Vegas is the housing values have more than doubled in the last 2 years, and gas prices have recently doubled, but teachers got a 2% raise. Roll Eyes  Education is obviously not a priority on the minds of many in "Sin City."  I've lived here almost 5 years (I'd now be considered a local!) and I've seen a HUGE growth in this area.  Vegas is a boom town, with that comes a lot of growing pains (traffic due to insufficient infrastructure), and a lot of crime.

I'd never regret moving out here, as Vegas has been a good experience for my family in general.  Except for having my home broken into 2 months ago! Roll Eyes  I too lived in a damp cool climate in Rochester, NY and I really wanted the sun and VW life too.  I didn't want CA because of the congestion, taxes, and high costs of living, so Vegas was a good fit for me.  I can still get in a car, hit all the big VW shows in a few hours and then leave and go home.

If you need more info about Vegas or CCSD, shoot me a PM or an Email.

That is true!   Rather than hire and pay experienced teacher that currently live here in the Vegas valley, we sent recruiters to the Phillipines to get teachers straight out of college!  There was a big stink about it on the local news at the beginning of this school year.  The district wants bodies for the classroom, not necessarily the most qualified!  This woman they had interviewed on the news, met all of the qualifications that the district had listed and she was past up because she had 15 years experience and a PHD in Special Education.  When the reporter spoke to the district, they skated around the issue and said it must have been some type of "rare glitch in their system."  It boiled down to the district trying to save money and not hire someone they would need to pay a higher salary to.  Roll Eyes

Scott, the horror stories I could tell on here from my 12 years of teaching and school politics.....I could write a book!

In fact I was thinking of doing an editolal posting in my Educators Exchange section on my forum soon and if I don't get rehired next Sept. (I doubt it as the supervisors know what kind of time and money I spend out of my pocket to improve my program each year & with Calif. the #1 Plastics processing state in the USA but only a couple of Plastics  job training programs....), I guess I'll have to expand the business instead (and actually make more money than now) ....and maybe write a tell it all book! Roll Eyes

If it is ok with you, I'd like to copy and post the Vegas job opening link that you listed on my forum?
