I liked the easter egg comment too and the comment about the stuffed dolls with hiding faces was spot on. Did they make any mention of the "Hawaiian Shirt Crowd?"

Just glad to share such reality with VW enthusiasts.  It sure puts things in perspective.

It's sort of like the Harley crowd of today.  Most are lawyers, doctors or worst... insurance brokers.... ha ha !!
Those with bucks can buy the best and fastest and drive it on Sundays and act like they built it.

We are a different breed as we work on our own cars and some of us build them.  It's just too bad that the VW hobby has been infected by some loaded people who buy what they want and when they want regardless of price.  This causes the values of collectible types to go up.  Then people like us can't afford to buy them.

A long time ago I was at a local car show and stayed until the end which is something I normally don't do.  A good friend of mine who is well into his 60's had a convertible bug and won 2 awards that day.  On both occasions when he went up to get the trophies he would get off the stage and look for a kid and hand it over to him/her.  After seeing this the 2nd time I went over to where he was sitting and started talking cars.  I asked him why he did that.  He answered "well Terry, it's like this.... a trophy in the hands of a 8yr old kid will make more difference in the world than in the hands of a tired 65yr old geezer".  I was speechless.....

Later that summer he passed away.  I will always remember what he did.  And to this day, if I am lucky enough to win a trophy at a show.... you guessed it.... I give them away.  You should see their faces light up with joy.  The parents don't know what to say.  I don't stick around.  Kinda shy about stuff like that.

What we do is a reflection of who we are.

Positive thinkers attract positive things.

Merry Christmas,

Terry

That's really nice, Terry...one thing that I really like about the CLF, and the VW community in general, is the people who not only actually build their own cars, and the willingness to experiment and try new things, but also share that knowlege and information with everyone else.  Everyone here wants to see the other guy/gal succeed, and we often go the distance to help each other out.

I work with Tri 5 Chevys and C1-C3 Corvettes on almost a daily basis.  newmancarcreations.com  I meet a lot of owners AND builders. When that one guy comes and picks up his chassis and tells us that he can't wait to set his body on and drive the sh!t out of it and is doing most of the building himself in his garage. I notice all the guys in the shop are aware of this and we usually remember this person and look forward to him pullin' up in the parking lot.

I have walked out to the parking lot on a regular basis to check out someones finished product, some worth $150-$200k and they might have more than that invested, only to walk around a "jolly ranchered" painted Tri 5 and say "that's nice" and go back to work. But, when that one guy comes back and says check it out and lifts the hood and opens the door and then you see the pride in his face, that's just awesome. He will then tell you that he was just cruising down the 5 freeway at 90 mph and took the twisty 58 over to have a little extra fun canyon carvin!

Most "shop builders" (i.e. Boyd Coddington), I did say most, not all, do a really nice job, but are only doing what the owner wants. I give total respect to the "backyard" builder that produces a car that puts a smile on his face.

just my 2 cents

i know how can someone explain to me that taking a new car and bolting on some pieces of carbon fiber or some polished and anodized parts is hot rodding these days. what b.s. a few years ago i went to a car show and it was not a all out vw show but they broke it down in classes just like normal. but they put my car in a class of modified german imports. i went up against a a new bmw, a chevy powered mercedes and a brand new passat that some kid bolted on a ton of crap too. well guess what i took second place to the passat. well you wanna see someone got nuts. i told the judges they where a bunch of morrons to thin that that car was of quality. i told them let me see that kid take a 40 year old car apart in pieces and work to make it look like something rather than just dropping some cash at the dealer and his local stereo and import shop for parts.

picture yourself 3 thousand miles away in a small New Engalnd state,RI...go to a small town called Coventry...now drive your '59 ragtop into Denny's...

...the matching shiny jackets witht the embossed logos...lawn chair and umbrellas in the parking lot...

...for a 2hr stay drinking sodas in front of Denny's.

...and the cars?...$5.00 paint jobs with the same chrome dress up kits...and murals...c'mon...

..when the wife and I roll in with our resto cal-look beetles, they don't know what to think but to move their cars over one or two spots...

Great Video.  Cruising.  Now that's dead out here in Orange County.  I miss the old days at Angelo's in Anaheim.

That reminds me, we used to make the drive up from San Diego when I was in High School {about 1970} to "Cruise"  Whittier Blvd.

Quite a "SCENE" it was, .....I think it was Friday nights....The cruisers went on for miles,    turned around and cruised some more....back and forth Grin

   FUN Times indeed...

Nice.  Thanks for bringing this back up, I had not seen it before.  I'm just waiting on some parts to come in, motor tore down in the basement.  Looking to squeeze a 13.99 out of the car this season, and drive it to work as much as possible.  Its just plain fun!
