Help with deciding which small truck

i am looking to buy a small truck some time soon, but i want it to be able to tow up the grapevine to bakersfield/sac and i have heard the tacoma 4banger is a great truck for towing even though its a 4banger.  i was looking into a tacoma/s10/ranger. but im looking into the years of 98-01 nothing newer since i cant afford a newer truck, please tell me what to know about each or experience on one of them, i heard the tacoma doesnt have as high as towing capacity as the others though?

TOYOTA !! I had a '93 Toyota with the 4cyd. & 5spd trans. It had the same towing capacity as my '03, #3500lbs. My '67 & trailer weigh right at 3000lbs. together. If you gotta get a 4 cyl. I'd get the 5 speed trans. Do you gotta trailer yet? If not get the lightest one you can..
