For those who worked on other cars...ahh Fords

My daughter has a Mustang II with a 2.8 V6, the bearing in the water pump took a poop...so I installed a new unit and thermostat....I installed antifreeze/water mix and started it with the cap off waiting for the thermostat to open up to top off the radiator....it never happened, the thermostat on this car is next to the lower radator hose not the top....so when the car warmed up the top hose got hot lower hose stayed cold...thinking bad thermo, I installed a new one...same thing, car does get hot but doesn't over heat....I noticed the thermo was a different type than the one that was in the car before...before it had the conventional type but the one the book specified had a extention with a round washer type deal to plug off the heater hose till warm up? Could this be it? Or....I've heard of bleeding the system, would this cause this problem....thanks for the help

How many miles on that Ford 2.8 V6? If a lot, I would have told you if you are planning to keep it, then change out the timing gears as stock they are press Phenolic teeth and they go away....
Do you have the thremosat in the correct direction?

yep, arrow toward radiator or top in pix
....the upper hose gets hot lower stays cold, the radiator looks new so I don't think it is clogged...the car is a 74 with 64,000 miles...nice

What temp is that thermostat that you used? Ive had nothing but good luck with the Robert Shaw Hi flow thermostats, and i like using the 160degree ones. Opens sooner.

It may have an airlock in it. Try jacking the front of the car up so rad filler is highest level. Run into that alot on chryslers and fwd gm stuff.

Wally where did you buy the replacement thermostat from? if from the corner big chain DO NOT TRUST thier knowledge. check with Mike Lancell at auto machine. those 2 don't look interchangable to me. maybe nitro mike will chime in he sees everything everyday
