I dunno, I don't follow the nostalgic performance stuff real close, as a) I can't afford to buy any of it b) I have no ROOM for it and c) all I would do is look at it. Recently, there was a collection of the first nine Bug-In (OCIR) dash plaques for sale, and it was actually a guy from my old hometown. Last bid I saw the day before it was ending was somewhere in the neighborhood of $500 plus. Is it just me or is this ridiculous? I'm torn, because I'm well aware of the sentimental value of VW parts, especially the old-school, pioneers-of-the-industry stuff. I used to collect a lot of different things, typically cheaper as I was a kid at that time and couldn't drive, so my priorities were different. But when I look at current prices like the aforementioned, I can't help but slip into the logical mode and think "You gotta be kidding me." I'm caught between the latter and "Holy schnikes!" Figured this was an appropo topic to bring up on the good ol' CLF, and am interested to hear other folks' opinions on the subject.

Man, that's nuts. I just can't imagine--at this financially limited stage in my life, anyways, lol--having enough disposable income to spend that much on stuff like that. Don't get me wrong, I'm just as sentimental as the next guy but to me that's borderline nutty

I sold a set of original Deano Dynosoar valve covers about 4 years ago for $300. Any idea what they're worth now? I found those valve covers laying in the back of a 1963 15 window deluxe I bought, the guy knew nothing about em. To be honest, I didnt know they were really worth anything until I saw a feature car in VW Trends that had them, and the caption read something like "whens the last time you saw a set of these" and a close-up pic. So, I put em up for sale and they sold within an hour. Kinda makes me wonder if I asked enough?

I remember being upset at paying $2,500.00 for five perfect magnesium BRM's. Recently, a set of four went for $8,000.00 !

So any guesses what a full set (1-31 – #32 doesn't count... ) of Bug-In programs , along with some racers' packs, car show forms etc would be worth?

they are worth what the market will hold. my person market says car go fast parts for that kind of $$$$ better guarantee a win light. but, i am a cheap slob, so keep that in mind. would i ever spend 8k on a set of wheels? nope... for that kind of $ i will just stick to my ugly wheels.

I'm surprised counterfit plaques haven't started showing up... I agree, prices are getting out of hand. So is gasoline, coffee, bottled water and the price of land in California! I saw the die cast vw collectable and collectable literature thing go nuts in the late 80's... I used to know a guy that had so much stuff it was incredible. I mean $100 for a 1/43 scale toy? I don't care if Dr. Porsche assembled it himself, it ain't gunna last I thought... who cares about sales literature, dealer color chart or original owners manuals from the 1950's? Well the original stuff has held and increased in value, the repop stuff have only increased the popularity of collecting, IMO. I guess it's all good, if having a room full to the brim with super-duper rare VW memorabilia gets you excited about life, then more power to you. Did I ever tell you about my hand carved duck decoys I collect?

So you thought you could "improve" on the ole' man's handyword, did-ya? LOL I had been an avid duck hunter for about 12 years, backed way off the last 3-4. I started collecting the old decoys as interesting folk art, but like the Empi stuff, it's hard to get a deal on anything authenticly old anymore. By the the way, for anyone who has traveled to Sears Point... I mean Infinion Raceway down Hwy 37 from Vallejo. The road travels over the Dick "Fresh Air" Jansen bridge. Oldy enough, "Fresh Air Dick" was a premier decoy carver that lived aboard a barge anchored in that slough for a few decades. His decoys are very sought after by collectors.

I definitely understand the concept of the market demand/buyers supporting the prices, I guess for me it's more of a naive "Holy cow" type of thing. I always knew Empi stuff was in high demand, but it really blew my mind when I saw that dash plaque auction...

Travel the swaps, find the good deals, clean em up and throw them on ebay. I did pretty well at that when I lived in AZ. For example, I bought a couple of 022's for $20, sold for $140+. Nice little supplement to the income.

Things in Damand, Anything Old or in limited supply, American Oak stuff from the past, Old Winchesters, not just Guns, there ware some 120+ non Gun items, Tools, Flashlights, Knives etc. etc. Lionel Trains OMG what prices they bring, anything old is now in Demand due to limited availibility, 10/15 years ago a run-out Oval VW could be had on the west coast for 3/400$, and today $$$$, Split Bus & Parts, amazing increases in Value over the past 5 years, EMPI items in the OG Blister Pack Command a small fortune and even Gold is now 720$ per Oz. and going UP ! If you think prices are high today, wait 5 years, you are wise to Buy Now, nothing is going down !!
