Anyone have any suggestions for allergy relief?  I love the warm weather in CA but my allergies are killing me!

Claritin if you need to stay awake,

Benadryl if you can doze off.

I started using RhinoCort Aqua last year.  Its a prescription nasal spray.  Had the best year I've ever had as far as no allergy symptoms.

I was almost thinking of moving! In the NorthEast it's one of the worst areas in N. America according to a map I saw in National Geographic. The places were the desert, like Palm Springs, and the prairies, like the MidWest.

Every year for the past 5 or 6 years my allergies have been getting worse. This year, they're killin me. I used to make fun of my brother, a serious allergy sufferer who takes steroid shots because NOTHING else works for him, but now karma is getting even. So far my allergies seem to respond fairly well to OTC's like Tylenol Severe Allergy and medicated eye drops. Claritin works good too, but it does nothing for immediate relief--- that stuff has to build up in the system for a few days before it does anything.

I have really bad tree pollen allergies and live in the mountains of Central PA. Cry I have used Allegra but had strange back bain that was finally traced back to a rare side effect. So if you are taking Allegra and your back hurts, might be worth checking out. Anyway the last three years I have been using a combo of Flonase and Claritin, with decent results. Most recently I have started the injection routine weekly to build up my tolerance, it is a big time commitment and no guarentee it is going to work. But I'll tell you there are days it totally, and I mean totally wipes me out, whe the pollen is bad.

The over the counter drugs are totally worthless to me. I take prescription Clarinex and also Nasacort spray. These really do nothing but take the bear off the allergies. A steroid such as Aristicort or Kenelog will do a great job, but doctors don't like to give them because there are long term risks involved. No doctor will give you more than 1 per year. A steroid shot lasts about 6-7 weeks, but allergy season for me lasts 4 1/2 months.
Invent a drug that takes away allergy symtoms without putting you to sleep and you'll be a rich man.

What I find odd is that Allegra D is by prescription only, but regular Allegra isn't.  And a decongestant isn't either.  So why is the combo prescription only?  In Canada Allegra D is on the shelf, so every time I head down to SoCal, I smuggle a few packages in for a friend.  Its not like she's addicted to them.
James, what does a package cost you?

Actifed is about the only over the counter stuff that works for me...and the worst of my allergies seem to come while I'm at the race track.  Ask anyone that's seen me at Woodburn, I think RK Smith and Mitch Kim can attest to that last year Grin

No matter what track I've been to I seem to have problems, Actifed or no Actifed.  Taking the medicine just delays the inevitable.  Toward 3:00 at Bug In 32, I was starting to have issues, though I managed to keep it at bay until getting to the airport.  It's torture, I tell ya.  I must be allergic to race fuel and burnt rubber Sad

I've never done well with any kind of medication, so I just keep a bottle of eyedrops to keep my eyes clear and just lay off my running and mountain biking for a couple weeks or so.  I tried some stuff once (can't recall the name); I have no recollection of what I did that morning, but everyone told me I was going like a maniac!  When it wore off, it was like hitting a brick wall...I flushed that crap down the toilet.

on the advice of my Doc, who has been doing this for 30 years, I took a cortazone injection last allergy season, did it again last week. NICE!

I've also had good luck with Claratin 24 hour, non-drowsey stuff.

Tom, That was exactly what I was warned against doing. I would LOVE to get a shot every year, but it will eventually eat away the bones in your hip (isn't that where they stuck you?). I want allergy relief, but I want to walk later in life too.
