I wonder if the blinding sun played a role?

15 years ago I worked with a guy who competed in professional rally driving in Canada. He told me of a crash he once had while rallying at night in the winter. He hooked a snowbank and spun the car, instantly knocking out the lights, sending the car hurtling towards the forest. They heard (and felt!) significant impacts along the way. When the car came to a rest, they collected their senses, turned on the interior light, and saw a large branch that had impaled the windshield, going right between the driver and navigator seats, penetrating some equipment in the back.

A few inches to the left or right may have resulted in a different ending. Literally.

BTW, he had little sponsorship, and his own out of pocket expenses were $75K per year. He said the only reason he worked was that it enabled him to race. His wife to be threatened him, "it's me or the car." He went racing.
