it appears to me they did not have to wear seatbelts. and what about the cabrio that came cruising around with the top down and four people and almost lost it. imagine what it would have looked like if it when over like the rest of the others. maybe the extra people weight kept it from going over.

Do you think our values have change a wee bit since that time? And how many Notchbacks did they roll in one afternoon? Yikes. I like the convertible filled with folks driving at warp nine with the top down, no belts..... Just another day at the track.

More recent footage:

My wife and I were over there for a few weeks last spring, and were disappointed that we couldn't take our rental car on the track because it was closed for the German Grand Prix. After seeing those videos, a VERY SMALL part of me is almost glad.  Shocked

Now, Herbie, NOW!

What a thrill that old film was!  It's been over 15 years since I drove on the 'Ring (in a new BMW 3 Series) on an open track day but do remember that the track is famous for "blind turns" where you cannot "read" which way the road goes, unless you really memorize the track, or have a friend in the car like I did who knew the track well after driving hundreds of laps on it.

Also seen:
VW K70 sedan (black one going off into woods)
BMW 1600 or 2002
Renault 10 (boxy 4-door sedan)
NSU TT or TTS (boxy 2-door sedan)
Fiat 850 (fastback), 600 (like small Beetle), etc.

Notice that the white '72 Beetle cabrio keeps its wheels down? IRS!

I wish we had a place (or places) in the U.S. where you can pay a few bucks and get a lap.  Maybe it would help keep the morons from trying it on the streets.
