Has anyone here been to the Michigan Vintage Festival in Ypsilanti? I'm going to be in Ohio over the weekend (next weekend), and I have nothing better to do, so I figure I might as well go. Anyone know how good the swap meet is there (should I plan on mailing stuff back to CA?). I was thinking about going up on Saturday, but now I'm thinking I may do something else on Sat and just get up early Sunday and head up. Anyone know how long of a drive it is from Dayton? Is it a pretty good show?

not to discourage you, but coming from CA, you will be dissapointed. I went last year and I wouldnt drive there from Detroit again and its less than an hour.
I spent a lot of time in the swap (had my own space) and there wasnt much to be had. Mostly rusty overpriced junk.
Show wasnt much to write home about. The highlight of the weekend last year was the DDK dyno day, but Im unsure if that event will happen again as one of the event organizers is in the process of selling all his VW possesions and plans on becoming a born again Evangelistic preacher. I wish him well. He is a decent fellow but has answered a higher calling. Its amazing, he gave an orphan an Autocraft motor. Brought tears to my eyes.

I've been to it 3 times and enjoyed it. I actually found some cool stuff in the swap, but the swap wasn't as good as those on the west coast. There are usually some unique vintage VWs and a lot of nice folks that love VWs.

I've been to the MVVC meet every year since '96 (held for many years at VWoA's premises before going to Ypsi) except for '05, driving in from southern NY. I'll also be there next week (cream Ghia cabrio with vintage NY plates that look like the Calif. "black plates") if my stupid engine lasts the trip. If the weather holds out and it continues to be held on the grassy field in Old-town Ypsi, the setting is wonderful. Swap meet last year had only a few hi-po items but did have lots of greasy, rusty stock parts at bargain prices. Alot of the cars and visitors to that meet drive in from large distances out-of-state. Of course, I realize that the same "large distances" apply to within the state of Calif. But somehow it lends credibility to the cars knowing they are driven, not trailered. The trip can often be as interesting and fun as the event, especially if you travel with another ACVW. Hope you decide to attend.

Not a bad show to go to unless it rains. I usually go because it was one of the first shows of the year, and it provides a little motivation to get things rolling after the winter - I drive in from the West Side about 2 hours away for me. No racing but a good car show never the less. Wild

Agree that its a good show. It won't really compare to the big ones in California but was certainly better than the 3 events I went to in Arizona (the BOR was cancelled the year I was living there so I cannot say how that one is)

Gotta agree - I think it's a very nice show in a very nice setting.... swap meet is usually just OK, but the show is very nice.
Sure - it may not compare to california, but that's probably an unfair comparison. There aren't and never were ANYWHERE NEAR as many vee-dubs in the midwest as on the pacific coast!

Thanks, I've got to hit the sack for a whole three hours and then get up and head for the airport (better than getting in late in the evening over there). Not sure if I'll go or not now, unless there's something else going on, or it looks like the weather's going to be crappy, I'll probably still head up there.

Well, you can always stop in at the show location mid-morning, and if it does not meet your "expectations" or if it is raining, then take a cruise over to Dearborn MI. to Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum. The museum is inside and you can spend a day going thru the displays of technology. Alot of cars on display along with old movies of cars, and "roadside" display dioramas.
