After reading Tom Simon's post about baylands, i dug out a few pictures...

The beautiful, but fated Bugpack ProSedan v. Mich Evensen!
PRA history right there!

Cory Mac against what looks like Bob Godfrey running his F/C as an Altered?
On second thoughts, too earely. Must be Pizzos? Or ?

Pat 'the mouth' Nelsen! Kawell power all the way...

Don't recognise the Buggy... Any guesses?

Gary Peloquin in Peloquin's Bug Catcher. He told me he was developing
a six-speed VW trans once. Guess that never happened...

Dragon Slayer in (almost) street trim. Yes?

Keith, the white buggy in the far lane is likely Greg "big air" McNair from Salinas... the cage shape looks familiar, the side of Greg's car has had "Bob's VW Machining" on it forever, I can't quite tell if that car is or is not lettered on the side

Dave Perkins and Dominics Dragon Slayer in that incarnation were two of my all time favorites.   The Pro Turbo cars of that era were so cool!

Larry Mckenzie actually owned that car before Mcnair in the 80's running at Baylands and Sears Point.

The one under the Small Car Specialties car is Bob Sager's (he stills owes me for those windows.... Undecided)

The earlier picture with "Sum Fun" was that Rodney (or his dad?) Shultz? That is for sale too as both of their cars are....

McNair and McNear...no relation!  Wink

Dave - I agree with you - loved the dragonslayer during this time - here's another shot of the car from the very first vegas race.

Very cool.  The black car with the lower rocker rainbow paint, didn't Bubetz have his car like that once.  I remember one of the mags covering it in an article on paint jobs.

Didn't the black Bob Sager car BECOME Bubetz's at a later date?

Yup.
Greg still has the buggy, and is still racing it, but he is doing more Auto-Crossing (Solo) these days.

Greg is the reason I got into VW's. Anyone who was around his house in the 80's can understand why.  Greg  lives on the corner of a Y-shaped intersection....vw's everywhere!!!

In my garage is a buggy that I think belonged to a McKenzie at one time, not sure I will have to check on its origins.

I think we were all at the same event  Smiley

Oooops....not sure what I did there... Smiley

I was mistaken about my buggy....It was owned by a guy named Lindsey, from Salinas. Was sold to a man named Dennis, in Modesto, and then a couple of years ago, I pulled it out of his garage, and into mine. Where it sits waiting for me to have some time and money. Hopefully soon.

When Larry McKenzie raced the buggy, I think it was blue, and he painted it white for Greg.

Still looking for pictures.
I really miss Baylands, used to go there almost every week.

I remember when Bob had that black car and had a truck that was painted to match it. Then Bubitz bought and ran it . Don't know where the car is now.
I saw the Sum Fun car for sale a couple of years ago at the VW panic in Upland but don't know where it went after that. I always dug that car in the 80's anyone know where he is or what he wants for the car?

I always like the SCS car. That had to be the most suttle chop job ever, something like 1 1/2 inches?Huh  That thing lauched really hard and was quick...  Heck I kinda miss SCS.  Went to SCS showdown 7.  To this day it was one of the very best VW shows I have ever attended.  The bikini contest was killer also...  remember Shannon Rae?

It still is for sale from last I know of. Fast Eddie (the hot rod fabber) is a back door neighbor (what a neighborhood....wink, wink...) and his wife is the daughter of the Shultz of "Sum Fun" fame and I forget the sons car name.....

If any one is interested in buying it, please PM me and I'll forward your information to them.

reading and seeing all this stuff from the old baylands track really brings back some memories.  i was going to that track with my father since i was a very wee lad.  my dad used to bracket race his street car in one of the sportsman classes.  at the last event he did his best ever up to that time, won second in his class. i remember being at his shop helping him tune the car for the strip. and several times he would drive the car from san jose to the track race all day and drive it home.  there were a few times when he would bring more of us kids with him and he would tow the car behind his 66 delux bus (with a nice 2 liter out back too).  after baylands closed down my dad didnt run his car at the track very much.  occasionaly he would at sacramento or phoenix, but never again on a regular basis.  he used to run 14.2's with his 69 street car with a berg 2110  power plant.  i wish to hell there was a drag strip closer to home these days...perhaps if i make tons of money i would open one somewhere in the south or east bay area.

Pizzo Brothers altered, one of two they had. This Pink one was H2O powered and the other was Blue and aircooled.

Late 1980s at Fremont.

lol definatly fun times indeed.  my 2110 build up for my 67 (which has taken way longer then originaly anticipated...wife wrecked the old car so had to replace it before finishing the engine) will be very very similar to his car.  his will be slightly faster but not by much...of course i still need to do a tranny so i could keep up with him. i remember taveling to LA with him having the speedo pegged going up the grapevine....and of course the rocket bus...never heard anyone call it that before, but  that is what it was for sure.  after he got rid of the 66 and built up the 71 camper i drove it daily for several months...man that was fun.  i will be heading out to phoenix in march to do a motor for the wifes 71 super...ill tell him you said hi.

What ever happened to Pat Nelson?

I'm still around and living in Irvine.  I have a 4 year old son, and a business that keeps me pretty busy.

I was however,  just recently thinking about putting a buggy together that I could bracket race - sorry, no interest in building a mega buck turbo car.  If i'm going to spend that much money to race, I'll throw a super comp car together.

Hi to any old friends or acquaintances
