ok so i have been thinking with all the technology of cnc why hasn't anyone made some nice custom wheels for us guys running 5 on 205mm lug pattern. i know of all the usual stuff like the brm's and the usual empi stuff. but how about some nice affordable larger wheels like 16", 17", and maybe even a 18". something not so dated and more like todays style wheels. they don't even have to be billet cnc because of the cost but what about cast aluminum wheels. if anyone has a link or a picture or a website post up what you know that you can share with us. i really don't want to go and change all my rotors out to porsche 5 lug pattern or even vw 4 lug pattern unless i really have to. i think it would change things up a bit. i mean come on look at some of the airkewld cars pics running those big billets and tell me they don't look good. it's just that they are not 5 on 205mm.

I like my old empi style 5 spokes but it would be nice to have them 4 inch wide in the front and 7s on the rear. Just a choice on diffrent width and offset would be nice.

Marty,

I've seen late model wheels on Beetles and they look like crap.

I've seen the article and they mention Paramount Distributor, which is the company I used to have mine repaired and calibrated.

I am with Glenn on this one. I would love a set of the tecnomagnesio wheels.

I'm with Glenn as well.  The "billet" look works in certain circles, mostly highly custom rides with pearl and metalflake paint.  In the world of Cal-Look, the old school theme is what's cool.   Cool  Clean and functional.

For the same reason you can't find any of the Tecnomagnesio rims anymore. The 5 bolt 5 x 205 mm VW wheel is such a small fraction of a percent of the wheel market in general, manufacturers don't even consider production. Any company considering production runs would need to make such a small run to insure they would actually sell the stock, the price would be a lot higher than a large production run. That, and the fact that VW people are generally cheap, not too many people would pay the money for the wheels. If the Porsche crowd isn't enough to pay $500 a piece for the Tecnomagnesio to keep them in production, the VW crowd sures hell isn't going to pay $250 each for custom wheels. If you want wheel selection, get your rotors/drums drilled for a Chevy 5 bolt pattern. I do agree that the older 15 inch wheels look better on an older Aircooled VW, and I personally hate the 17+ inch ones.

I too would like something "different", it's just not going to happen. EMPI is doing their best to repop almost every retro style of aftermarket Aircooled wheel, but it ends at that, retro. They seem to be the only company actively producing wheels for the Aircooled crowd. When people cry to me about paying $99 for an aftermarket EMPI wheel, which is about as inexpensive as I can remember an aftermarket wheel for, NO ONE that I deal with would pay $200+ for a limited production "custom" wheel of a different design. If you aren't going to sell them, no one will produce them. Maybe this is your calling. Go buy a 5 axis CNC machine, and start poping out wheels for $50 a piece.

Yup... VW people are cheap. They'll complain about paying $100 for a gravity cast wheel. Forget about paying for a forged wheel.

I remember back in 91 when I payed $300 a piece for a set of Abt wheels for my Passat and all my ACVW friend thought I was nuts. The wheels were awesome and really light and strong.

yeah i here ya about vw people being cheap but on the other hand you see people buying high price engine parts and such why not wheels. it's a strange thing the way we react to certain things in this hobby.

I paid 900 for my two front wheels, so not everybody is cheap, I just don't think the new style of wheels would look good on a oval.

I gladly paid the required 1150 for a set of ERCO stars 2.5 years ago. It was an investment worth making for my car. It gave it it's own unique look. The wheels were pricey, but, that allowed me to set my car apart from the rest. If a buyer wants something cool, they'll pay for it.

The VW crowd kind of has it lucky (when talking about the reproduction wheels).  I like the fully polished 8-spokes on my '71 but would really like a set of original Fuchs.

I would think the 5x205 wheels would be tough to get mounted using the new tire machines - do places still have the adaptor?

The price for custom wheels for my vintage BMW are much higher than for the VW.  I ended up with 14x6 Superlites (10 spoke design) that were $ 150 each in the standard finish.

By the way, vintage Cosmic alloy wheels are popular with the Bimmer crowd. They look cool on both VW's and BMW's.
