Putting new window rubber seals in. That was a pain in the ass. Especially the windshield on a curve window super beetle. Next time , Im paying someone to do it.

In hindsight, for me, it was probably replacing the heater channels. Not that it really was extremely difficult, but it's a large scale job that required a lot of fitting, and finishing. There are a lot of jobs that seem really difficult before you do them, but aren't that bad once you've done them. There are also a lot of jobs that once you do them, you figure out much easier ways to do them the next time.

Getting the rear nuts started on intake manifolds with dual carbs and no "Weber windows"...what a pain. First you have to get your hand down there with the nut positioned just right in your fingertips so you can start it on the stud without dropping it.

Amen. I scrape my arms up every time I pull the carbs/manifolds out. I drilled (2) access holes in the side panels for mixture adjustments (Dellorto carbs), but want to put in some "windows" without them looking too cheesy. I think Gary Berg's Blue '67 had some aluminum panels and I remember the recent Hot VW's article that used K&N panel filters, but I don't want to weld frames in the car.

There was a whole thread on this topic a while back on the CLF. Some guys posted some pics of some really nice looking access panel fabrications. Maybe you can find them if you do a search, or they could repost the pics. I don't remember who it was.

I found the thread http://www.cal-look.com/forum/cal-look-high-performance/weber-windows/. Thanks for the advice. I was thinking about the aluminum panel with single dzus fastener just like pictured in the thread.

For me the hardest thing to do on the VW is finding time to work on it. Other than that, I am not all enthused about doing body work. I would rather be building engines.

Clearancing the crankcase and bearings with hand tools to fit the 84 crank/5.5 rod combo. Grind with dremel, power wash, check rod clearance, remove, grind, power wash, check...

The vent wing window rubber was a pain the hind quarters. I would say installing a larger 3/8" fuel line with AN fittings through the tunnel. That was a 3 hour job with two people, even with two access holes cut into the tunnel hump. If I put in another bigger line I am going to do it differently than I did. Very frustrating. Yeah and also finding time, now, to work on my bug.

Or looking at your crunched up car, that still hurts when I see pics of it.
