That is what I thought. Why isnt that thing coming apart? And why is he staying in it?!? What could be the cause of this other than not running high grade fuel? I am having a problem with my car doing this...Didnt do it before and just developed what sounds just like that. I pumped all the gas out and Ran straight race fuel and it still did it. it is starting to do it as low as 7psi. My compression is at 7.3 and it was doing 14lbs on pump without a problem just a few weeks back. Timing is at 24 degrees.

HAHAHAHA!!! That was a funny ass day! Heads were only at like 20ft lbs. This was just one of those days where we didnt feel like working on it and said, "Let's turn it up and see what it'll do" "Go or blow" LOL. That little 2165 has been to hell and back and now the rotating assembly is in 2strokes car.

I have no idea who posted that, I searched turbo vw on that site. I think the heads need to be torqued...now that I think about, one of the things I did to try to start trouble shooting this problem was a valve adjustment, the left side of the engine had HUGE amounts of gap. I was like yikes somebody doesnt know how to adjust valves...So now I am thinking that Head must be loose. I thought this when I first noticed this but my buddies told me its not that. lol. Can the heads be torqued while the engine is in the car?

Absolutly they can be. If it's a full body car, prob cant get to the top nuts, but a few minutes later you could have it dropped out of the car. Torque them to 5-8 ft lbs over stock torque settings if they're a decent stud and have fun.

I have stock 8mm studs. What should I torque them to? And honestly...How much boost is safe with these studs?

If your car makes sounds like that with 8mm studs, it wont matter what you torque them too. 10mm is best with a turbo.
20 pounds of torque is max you can really go.

I know I've run 22psi with 8's and I think Jerry Matsko ran 28-30 on an 8mm. Alot has to due with tune up too. Don't look to that video for guidance.

Does my theory make sense though? That the Valve adjustment was WAY loose on that one side, I think they had has come loose.

you cant figure that out. after i have a nice steak dinner i sharpen up a nice 8mm stud and get the garrbage out of my teeth. thats what ther good for right. nothing personal 8mm have ther place in some engines not in a 250/300 hp turbo moter. just my opinon jeff d.

If the head was loose the valves would get tight. steve

The rockers are bolted to the head so if the head comes loose that will bring the rockers farther from the push rod. End result, loose valve lash.

umm and the compression ratio, and the cfm the turbo puts out, and the displacement, and the cam, and the heads, rod ratio. you get my point. i think ANY performance engine should have 10mm studs.

What kind of power though? 25 psi does not really mean anything. Did you intentionally build a turbo motor with 8mm studs or was it an aspirated motor that you converted or just something that you had?

Its all in the power level... actually cylinder pressure. 25 psi does not mean.... x amount of power......

those are trick questions marty it's like my wife said,"When it comes to studs, size is everything."

EXACTLY! You could have a small duration cam with 108 LC (for example) and run 35 psi but have NO cylinder pressure. Or you could have a 2200 cc motor that has a LOT of cylinder pressure that makes over 300 HP with only 10 PSI.
