Hey guys,
Yes! It's Friday and I had a busy week. I cleaned up my carbs last night and thought I would post this question:
     1. What makes 48 IDA's a better carb for drag racing then a 48 DRLA carb?
I know the Dellorto has another circuit and is supposed to be more user friendly and more tolerant to altitude changes.
Seems the big drag guys that go carbs run 48 or larger IDA's. So do they deliver more fuel faster then DRLA's?
I run DRLA's and am quite happy with them.
      2. If you took my motor(2165) and put Weber IDA's on it, what difference would there be? More power? If so, how much?
      Thanks Wink

Not much difference at that level of tune.
They come into thier own once you start going really big in CC's and ports that can outflow the DRLA.
The IDA will work fine with upto a 45mm vent (some guys just take them out all together.
Plus, you can buy glas ball inlet valves for IDA's and other mods to get more out of them.

48 IDAs are bigger!
What?  They're both 48mm you say?  That's only at the bottom where the throttle plate is.  Everywhere above that, they're bigger.  Bigger means more air.  More air means more hp.
For a daily driven street car, the Dellorto is the better choice.

Yep, agree with the points above. Out of the box, the DRLA is better street carb, primarily due to the extra progression ports. A modified IDA, however, can be just as smooth.

I prefer modified IDAs on the street because jet access is such a breeze. My IDFs, for example, were a pain in the ass.

People's preference for IDAs is primarily due to their history and folklore. Sex sells.

My 1.5 cents.

personally not concerned about smoothness, and I would not rate Dellorto's better because they seem smoother on the street. I like Webers better in every respect. through the years I worked my way up (cost and performance wise) from DCNF's to IDF's, and then to IDA's, and tried Dellorto's in between. for me its webers or fuel injection.

Thanks you guys! It was not really a "What carb is better" but "What the differences where" between the two.
I like them both. The Dells are fine for me and I still feel I am learning to tune them.
I am really making a bigger effort this time to make my motor look better and run even better then before.
   I like my dells.
       Thanks

I call my 40 DRLA Dellorto's  "set and forget".  I followed the CB Performance installation guide in their tuning book when I first got the carb package and later installed their upgrade kit along with the isolation mounting spacers (whistle reducers).

I see where EMPI has recently updated their Weber imitation carbs (HPMX).  Wonder how they work in comparison to the previous ones..
