White brake drums and spring plates - oh the 1980s I remember going to the Bug Outs in Manassas, Virginia in the late 1980's and early 1990's, and that shop was always debuting some over-the-top show car. I think that I actually went to their shop, but it was a long time ago. Are they still around? J

John,
I'm not sure, but I do know that one of the former employees (Billy Ridgeway?) has another VW business here in VA (Northside Automotive & Customs in Madison). They have turned out some really nice cars (displayed at the recent Bug Outs). VW Restorations & Customs did a ton of business and did some really nice work. Do you remember the Hot VW's articles on "Rustoration" and the Bright Yellow Super Beetle build? Those were done at VR&C in Manassas, VA.

Boy, does THAT bring back some memories. I had a '71 Super convertible at the time and really followed that series. I don't recall who was behind that (Deano?), but I really appreciated it. JP

Todd Kaho was the man behind the series. I believe he was living in Ohio and the car was built in VA. He followed VR&C as they transformed the once beat-up Super into a really nice Street Machine. Todd drove it to Ohio and back to VA for some fine tuning. I remember it being on display at one of the Bug Outs. Chuck H. built a mild 1776cc engine with dual Dellortos(?) that got good highway mileage. I believe the long block was a hydraulic lifter unit from MOFOCO.
Paul Suplizio (owner), Chuck H. (engine man), Bill Ridgeway (body and interior), Ed Robertson (paint) and others seemed to consistently crank out great cars.
Remember Billit Machine Products? That was another company from VR&C.

I remember the VR&C cars quite well from back in the '90s, when I was in high school and obsessed with VWs. Lol. My only complaint is too many of the cars had the same features, namely billet accessories interiorwise and in the engine bay. Sometimes felt like, aside from wheels and paint, that I was looking at/reading about the same cars over and over.

That pretty much sums up the entire VW hobby. Occasionally, somebody comes out with an over the top budgetless car but how different is it? Look at the Cal-Look craze. Sure the cars are clean but aside from paint they look alike with one of a few engine combinations and wheel combinations. VRC manufactured a lot of those billet parts so the cars will be outfitted with them.

Yep - early '90s, as I remember seeing that Ghia and white Bug in person. I was blown away by that Ghia back then.
I think that it was also in Hot VWs.
