EL MONTE - A man was shot and killed at an auto shop in El Monte Wednesday morning, police said.
Police responded to an auto shop in the 3500 block of Santa Anita Avenue at 6:29 a.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials said.

The shooting occurred at 5:45 a.m., deputies said.

The man killed was Hector Urias, a family man who enjoyed auto racing and had one of the fastest Volkswagen Beetles around, said friend Bob Elias.

"He was such a good guy," Elias said. "I don't know that this guy had any enemies."

Elias, a drag racer, knew Urias from the racing community, he said.

In addition, their wives work together at a local elementary school, he said.

He said the Urias family was just about to finalize an adoption.

Unreal... his family is in my prayers.  I never met Hector, but I've never heard anything but just great things about the man.

Haven't been on here in a minute, but heard today from my father.

I will always remember Hector's Smiling face and the good energy that he brought everywhere with him. R.I.P. Hector Urias.

yes ...very sad news to hear this morning ...!....I met Hector a few times going to his shop..he was a very nice guy..!!.....He will be missed

i cant believe it... i used to work at hectors shop on saturday mornings and he would help me work on my bug... if i ever needed advice or help with my car or just anything in general he was always there pushing me to push myself above and beyond... hector was a mentor to me... weather it was bullcrapting at the shop or the track or working on a bug or learning something new he was always there!

his family is in my prayers... RIP HECTOR "The Smiling Assassin" URIAS

This is terrible news. I met Hector numerous times and he was one of the nicest individuals you will ever meet. This news saddens me greatly. What a senseless loss.

My dad just called and told me about it. During the last ever NHRA Sport Compact event held at Pomona, Hector and his crew basically took my dad in as an honorary member of their crew. They gave him shirts, beer and fed him. Everytime we met him after that or talked via PM he was super nice person.

I have a heavy heart for his friends and family.

That last Pomona NHRA Sport Compact Race was a Great time for sure.
Hector was in full effect. The Smiling Assassin, took me in the final. Smiley
Makes me glad that I gave him that Quick 16 win at the start line.
He got a wally out of it too. .010 red light in both lanes, but I was slower, so I red-lit first. He intimidated the hell out of me, and he even had a hurt car.

So glad I got the time I did with him. Smiley

A truly great man has been lost. I was moved beyond words by the funeral and memorial... standing room only, hundreds of people in attendance... Fox news did a great job of covering the memorial last Thursday. I got to meet Hector's wife at the event, she's a very brave and strong woman, and I saw once again how the VW family comes together in times of crisis and tragedy...
