To get 160 lbs on the seat I need to put 1 thick, 1 medium, and 1 thin shim underneath the valve spring.  The pocket at this point is pretty much non existant.  Can the spring just sit there on top of the shims or does it have to have some sort of pocket all the way around to sit into?

Thanks,

Ryan

That's .095" of shim in there? you may have coil bind issues at full lift that way depending on your set up, Perhaps you should get a different spring with a stiffer wire if you are looking for that seat pressure number. BTW, standard VW duals usually set up in the 125-135 Lb range, what springs are you trying to set up?

Darren,

I have a set of Berg springs and high lift retainers.  I am not at coil bind because the retainers bought me some extra room.  I have another set of mistery springs and retainers but i don't like the retainers because they just don't seat like the Bergs.  Another interesting thing is that the outer and inner springs are very tight.  The inner doesn't come out very easy when i compare them to the other springs.

some heads have hardly any spring cup. havent had to do it in a long time. tig weld in spring cups then you can stack in as many shims as you want and the spring has support.jeff d.

Whats the Part No.'s on those Berg Springs and retainers ? What is the Intalled Height with that bunch of spring shims?

I would try a different retainer then with a lower installed height. are your Cro-moly or Ti?

Sounbds like the retainer gave you extra intalled height but you are offsetting that with that much shim stack.

Thanks all for the replies.  I am going to use the original retainers which give me a lower install height and the Berg keepers.  The Berg keepers and retainers fit so nice together a little tug and it is all locked together.  When I use the other keepers and retainers it kind or rocks around and doesn't seat as well.  The Berg keepers and the unknown chromoly retainers just don't seat like the all Berg set up but it is the best compromise.  I am sure 160 lbs of seat pressure will seat everything in.  With this combo I only need to use the thin shim to get what I need.  Thanks again.

Your better off having spring pockets if you turn over 7K.
My 044 heads are shimed .142 avg., installed height is 1.530 avg., running clearence is .057 avg. the springs are above the aluminum. I dont turn over 7K and there is zero float.
