I would double check again without seal and try to figure out where you are loosing your end play.

Dumb question:  why are you checking endplay this late in the build?

i set the end play out of the case at first with the rear seal. drop the whole assembly into the case lost the end play. remove flywheel tap seal in as far as it would go, no end play. brand new aluminum case by the way. thinking the No1 bearing needs to be changed?Huh the thing is once you set the end play it should not change. proir experience and following instructions. i'm lost here...maybe the quality in the machine work of the case nowadays isn't the same as in years past. i don't know.

thanks for all the help, greatly appreciated,

Maybe check that there is a chamfer on the thrust bearing as that can be a problem - it was a problem on my build. Remember the Monster Garage engine seizing because of this problem?

It is always a good idea to check endplay after final assembly. Just to make sure that things went together right, I had a o-ring get pinch once, I found it when I check endplay one last time, good thing I did or things would of ended up bad.

How hard was it to press in the bearing when you installed it?
for the case to be somehow poorly machined, it would have to be significant (like .004") to cause lockup on the flywheel.
That means you would have to pound the bearing into the case on assmebly.
Was it hard to get seated when you built it?

Also, it is possible that something else is binding up when you install the flywheel.
There could be a crank-to-case clearance issue that is not detected unless the flywheel is bolted up. Common with some cases and brands of stroker cranks. You may have to check your clearanicing job.
Also, the oil slinger could be installed wrong and hitting the case only when flywheel is boltled up.
Distributor drive could be bound up too. Make sure it's seated all the way before installing flywheel. Tore up more than a few drive gears this way.

Take time to look for these kinds of issues as you take it apart.

I know it sounds stupid but I had the same thing happen to me one time and come to find out somehow the spring inside the seal cam out while I was installing the flywheel and got pinched between the flywheel and the shims. I'm sure you would've caught that by now though.
