i was noticing the 'new to me' racer's e-brake isn'tall that tight... so i gotto thinking. should i leave it set up to barely put drag on the rears and then us it to slow down the car at the top end without applying pedal to the front brakes? or, should i just set it up normal and coast out then apply pedal?
which do you guys with brakes at every corner use?

I use my feet Brian.... Are you gonna use the E-brake to stage or stop??? I coast to the last turnout hear.... I actualy have to drive the car to it because it is up hill and build for 300mph cars....

brakes are one of the most dangerous things on a race car. i do NO high speed braking. i engine brake decelerate in high gear untill a resonable speed is met. then add to that foot brake as needed. i have used the brakes on the racing surface before.......only as a last ditch effort and i knew things were not going to get any worse than they already were......they did scrub a little speed before impact.

I agree, but it makes a differance if you have 4 wheel brakes vs 2. its well known the the fronts do most of the stopping. few years ago the NHRA prostocks went through a real time with rear brakes causing top end crashes due to heat or drag something like that.

Is this a problem for swing axles only or is my car really that slow? I'm running 13.2's in a irs car with discs on all 4 corners. I am going through the traps at nearly 100, immediately push the clutch, and hit the brakes. I have no trouble stopping before the first exit You fellas have me worried that I'm tempting fate but the car stops fast and straight with not even a wiggle.

This is one big advantage an IRS car has at the track. That and the fact that the camber doesn't change at the start.

I dunno.. I just cannot bring myself to even let go one hand on the wheel at 100+ MPH... let alone reaching for the e-brake. I have a kung-fu grip on the wheel at top end.

I used my e-brake at over 100 mph a few times. It didn't slow down as fast as with all four brakes, but it felt more stable.

I run a Swing axel with 4 wheel discs and I always use the brakes. I have limiting straps so I won't get excessive camber change. At the end of a pass I get off the gas and hit the brakes. Small and light pumps at first sort of just scrubbing off speed as opposed to trying to stop. Then get progressively longer and stronger pumps. Works for me at over 125 mph

I use the brakes just like any thing else. cross the line, pull it out of gear and gently apply brakes as normal. I do pull up on the e brake from time to time when the shut down is short. basically putting a little extra bias into the rear and making them work a bit harder. It has also felt better to me if i use the e brake in the right lane of Irwindale going over the whoopdi doo's. as i come over the bumps, i let off the brakes a little and still have a light drag on the ebrake, and it feels as though the car tracks the bumps better instead of trying to get the rear air born. I am a braket racer, so brakes have never scared me if used properly and adjusted properly and the car alignment is right. (lot of seat time helps too) there has only been a few times where my car has moved dramaticly at palmdale in a heavy cross wind.

actually the in car vid of your car at the end of the DD video at c-bad got me to thinking about it mike... i figured rear wheel drag with the ebrake might just keep the car more straight while scrubbing speed than tapping the pedal.

I havent seen that video in ages. I think my buddy out in Georgia has it at the moment. I do remember that, since the turn out was close out there, it was just a habbit i picked up any time i went there. Funny thing is i really dont remember doing all that until i saw the video. Guess i was always in autopilot mode.

Two weekends ago i was racing my 57 , Running a 12.2 dial in .I don't think there is enough load on the susp, to up set the car at all. I would not worry about it at all. I would'nt slam on the brakes but you should be able to get on them like your stoping on the freeway. Going faster, mid 11's and more is a whole different ball game.

Why would you want your brakes dragging? You are racing and trying to fast aren't you? The brakes are going to lower your times and may not work as well, they may heat up the shoes and glaze them and the drum.

i'm not looking for dragging brakes... i was looking into using the e brake as a way to scrub speed without locking up the ebrake.

I had alot of confidence in my brakes as the car always tracks straight being an IRS. One day in Irwindale I got on them to make the first turn off, and one of the front tires locked up a tad.. sent me in a sideways slide and a 360 at the guardrails.. ended up with my ass jammed against the rollcage, and the pillar.. and the hood popped open as I stopped.
Needless to say now I merely back off the throttle, coast and use caution with the brakes. No need to be in a hurry after the traps at all.
I'm sure the late night bench racing at Sheldon's until beer-thirty in the morning didnt help my judgement either =P

Hay John. about time you joined the party. Yea blame it on me LOL. to the rest. Back in the day, before we knew better, John and I would be driving side by side, going noware, but as we approached an intersection, one or both of us would both gas it to see who could take the stripe (cross walk) and it was not uncommon to practically lock the brakes up LOL. them young dumb and full of it days.

Yep.. and I always pushed you out at the top end. Funny stuff.
Hey.. you remember when we were in the Daily Breeze at the Esplenade and they did that article on cruising at the beach? My brother was here in Atlanta last year with a bunch of family junk and that article with us in the picture was in the pile of clippings. I'll get him to send it to me and I'll post it.
