Is it possible to acutually skip a tooth on timing? like get on it so hard that is skips time.  I have done it on a V8 with a worn out timing chain but on a bug its gear to gear can you do that? Huh

Not without doing some major damage to the crank drive gear.

However, it will bounce up and down if you don't have that little spring thats supposed to be in there...

I havent changed anything and all of a sudden my timing is set about 3* higher than it was.  I noticed when my idle was about 200 rpm more than usual.  I disconnected the throttle cable to make sure it was not pulling and it wasnt so I checked my timing and it was out.  WTF? How does that happen?

I am running 44 IDF's with 009 and pertronix with a German Blue coil and plugs gapped at .028

Maybe the dizzy is messed up I will swap that out tonight.

Well I checked my Carbs and I have an intake leak on the 1-2 side and it is causing my increase in rpm.  I assume that is what caused the timing to be up was the increase of rpm not vise versa.

So I am going to pull the 1-2 intake and put a new gasket and see if that fixes it.

If your timing is changing (advancing) at idle, then you will have a hard time getting a steady idle out of the motor.
Advance shouldn't start until 1,500rpm or later.

Well I think I found it!

The magnetic ring for the pertonix was crack on top of the magnet and I think it was causing it to move around changing my timing.

I replaced the ring I will see how she runs on the way home from work.

Well it fixed the ping at high RPM now I have to figure out why it feels like a slug.  I havent changed anything and its not very snappy!

It feels like it runs up like a lawnmower.  It gets up there in rpm but is real slow to do it.

Am I running too rich? too much squirt on accel pumps?
Timing is at 30* max @ 3500

I adjusted my A/F mix today on the way to work because it was popping back out the carb which mean it was lean at least on one cyclinder.
