Please help me with this

I will install a mallory hyfire ignition box

I want to know how many degrees of timing retard I need to  set for :

1.- Engine start ?- I'm thinking in 4 degrees retard for cold starting

2.- Nitrous ? 18/22 jets,  I'm thinking in 2 degrees retard

thanks

Set engine max timing at 30-32 degrees. Start with 18n 20f at 7psi. Retard 4 degrees. Then, make 1/8 mile runs with clean shut off and read plugs. Seems as every motor/combo is different as to what nitrous tune the motor wants.

In my case, I run a MSD6 box with the older analog MSD retard box. That setup requires that you lock out the dist advance due to that retard box has an internal 20 degree retard on startup. In your case, with the type of  Mallory 6 box you have, the retard function for startup is not neccessary if you do not run a lockup dist. I bet that function is there for the turbo racers who normally lock out their dist.

Are you sure ?

I'm confused, why the retard box can retard timing with nitrous and not at start cranking ?

They are 2 seperate functions of the 685 box.  I'm running locked out at 30 degs and have tried it set at it's minimum and maximum- no difference- it has never had a hard time starting hot or cold.

For my race motor, it has a locked out dist. I did this because it makes it idle much better/stable.
However, locking it at 32deg makes it hard to start, espicailly with 12.6/1 compression ratio.
I have the start retard function set at max (10deg) for starting.

I recommend to others who run this same mallory box to do the same as it makes any motor idle better and more snappy on the throttle.

For turbo motors, I use the boost retard function for "on boost".
