   I have the stock long axles on the car now and was wondering the pros and cons of going with the shorter axles.  Any input would be great.

I did the change in my '72 (Canadian bugs were still swing) and it allowed for easier tire & wheel fitting.

I swapped my '68 long axles for some SAW short axles ('66-length) in order to get more rubber under the fenders.  Now I can (just) fit M&H 215/65's for the track:

I installed early axles on my '67, and have before and after pics if you want them.  Basically, you'll narrow up each side about an inch.  I added CB's wide 5 disc brakes, which pushed me back out about an inch per side.  I run 5 spokes now with 205/70's, and will be running my 6" centerlines with M&H 215/65's here soon.  Eric

I believe the difference lies in the end castings, but I haven't measure the tubes to double check.  I bought my axle tubes and end end castings as one unit and also the axles.  You will obviously need the short axles as well.  I recommend getting the end castings and tubes just to be safe.  It's a straight across swap.  Here are some before and after pics, using a 195/65 at the time.  Eric

Keep in mind, the brakes I run added a 1" track width each side, so basically I'm back to about a stock '67 track width.   Undecided

Gents,
Follow up question(s) to this post, I have a '67 sedan with the stock "long axle" transaxle and 165 tires, and want to install shorter axles and type 3 drums so that I can run 205's under the fenders:
1) Can the axle assemblies be swapped out without removing the engine/transaxle from the vehicle?
2) Does anyone know where/when this was written about? I seem to recall reading about this in HVW's or some other publication in the not-too-distant past.

I got the shorter axles on my 67 and now I run 6in centerlines and DOT 215x65s and fit good.

If you have ever pulled the axles out of you trans before you know it can be a PITA. I wouldnt want to do that and the tubes with the trans in the car. Thats just my opinion though, and if you have a super diff double snap rings make it worse. I would just pull it all out to make things much easier. Just my 2 cents

The difference is in the end castings. You could press your end castings off get  the short castings and cut your tubes down. It can be done I'm the car, but it will probably take just as long as droping the engine and trans. And alot more cussing too!

Okay, thanks, that's the info I was looking for.  Sounds like too much trouble, recently got the bug all back together, the last thing I want to do right now is start pulling it apart again!  I'll live with the 165's for now...
