My first attempt at a "performance engine" in my '75 Std Beetle didn't turn out so well:
Slip-in Cima 87mm pistons
Reman. Cofap dual port heads
I added single high-rev springs and aluminum retainers
German 009 distributor
Single Dellorto 40mm carb (Bugpack kit with aluminum center section and stock end castings)
Thunderbird glasspack exhaust
I might as well poured gas right from the station into the carb. After a while, the intake manifold leaked so bad, I had to wrap duct tape around the "hose" connections.
Next combination was stock Solex carb with single QP exhaust header during my trips to college. Better.
Final combination on that engine was dual Weber 34ICT carbs and Bosch 205 distributor.
This Type IV engine in my friends '72 Fastback used to run dual Solex 40P11 carbs. They were so worn out, he could never get it to run well - the Solex's were replaced by Weber 40IDF carbs.
