I ran dual Dellorto 36 DRLAs on a 1600 with header and 1.25 rockers back in the late 70s and it ran great.

Not 40's, IMO.  44's, yeah, but I can't imagine 40's being overcarbureted for a 1600 or 1776, if properly jetted with the right vents.  Kadrons have their place, but I don't see the point of modifying them to larger sizes in terms of the money invested and what the end result is.

Yeah, I didn't think of 40s.  I bought a car with a 356 engine in it with poorly tuned 44s many years ago and it nearly ran us out of the shop with unburnt fuel fumes when we fired it up.

Agree with the above. I've had Kadrons, IDFs, installed lots of Dellortos and ran IDAs (what I have now). Plus stock Solex (single and dual) and Holley Bugsprays.  Kadron's are fine, IMHO, but can never match the smoothness of a pair of properly set-up dual, two-barrel carbs.

My 1.5 cents.

I've always been curious about performance and tuneability of Solex P11s, but at that point, I suppose one may as well just go with IDFs.

My IDFs never works correctly until mark harney rebuilt.
But I use to have 1600 100 cam dual 40 idf with 28 chokes 50 idle 110 main and was a great engine. I never used 36, but 40's for me is not overkilled for 1600, far superior than 32,36 dfav and 34 ict

88 pistons, 009 dis, aluminum retainer, 120 cam in stock engine, etc a alot of stupid things

My first attempt at a "performance engine" in my '75 Std Beetle didn't turn out so well:

Slip-in Cima 87mm pistons
Reman. Cofap dual port heads
I added single high-rev springs and aluminum retainers
German 009 distributor
Single Dellorto 40mm carb (Bugpack kit with aluminum center section and stock end castings)
Thunderbird glasspack exhaust

I might as well poured gas right from the station into the carb. After a while, the intake manifold leaked so bad, I had to wrap duct tape around the "hose" connections.

Next combination was stock Solex carb with single QP exhaust header during my trips to college.  Better.

Final combination on that engine was dual Weber 34ICT carbs and Bosch 205 distributor.

This Type IV engine in my friends '72 Fastback used to run dual Solex 40P11 carbs.  They were so worn out, he could never get it to run well - the Solex's were replaced by Weber 40IDF carbs.

Uhg, I remember slip-ins with a single Dellorto carb - what a horrible combination!

Live and learn (hopefully)...
