Maybe it's me but the sound of 48s and 3in muff from my big heads and cam 2.5 engine with loud gears is so cool. It might not be as fast as a turbo but jus cuz the sound to me makes it just as fast. Specially late at night wen you trying for wake up the dead. What you think.

100% agree.  This is one of the reasons I haven't taken the plunge yet to go with a turbo.  I simply prefer the sound of a well-tuned, deep-breathing IDA engine.  I also like the "instant" throttle response.

I've heard the comment that the open turbo exhaust made it sound more like a V8 than a bug.

I'd have to agree that the sound of a high compression VW with an open stinger is pretty awesome!!

Grin  yeah, I'll have to agree with "Buggy Mike",  I love the exhaust note of the naturally aspirated VW engines. They sound so sweet. Especially when the  driver hits the shift points just right,  Cheesy and engine's pulling so hard. Just awesome as they go through the eight mile, haulin' the mail. Grin Kiss LOL

I've got a open header turbo car it sounds great to me, but I still like the sound of a well tuned n/a car better.

It's a damn shame that you guys limit yourself. Personally, I prefer that harmonious sound of a supercharged engine.

Should you prefer, then listen to the fuel surge of of the Australia based supercharged ACVW drag car. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bAI2uBxzIXE

I'd take the turbo any day.  I had one years ago in a rail and will never forget how sweet it sounded with an open pipe...

There's no denying that turbos have FAAAAR more potential for speed over NA.  But, for me, and I'm not trying to start an argument here or anything, but for me, fast NA cars have a lot more cool factor.

There's this:  "An 11 second car?  Cool.  Oh, it's a turbo?  Whatever."

Then there's this:  "An 11 second car?  Cool."

Superdrag said it all. Of course turbo cars are fast ,but, nothing like the growl of some big dual throat carbs. Just raw and mean  Cool
  but.....
Ok, so this isn't a video, it's audio, but someone a while back posted this here, I think in 2004 and it has always been a favorite of mine.  It just sounds bad-arse.  If I remembered correctly it's 1953 Formula One 1500cc supercharged BRM V16.  I've had these links saved off in my favorites.  I think the in car and loud pass are my favorites.

I LOVE the sound of IDAs. So much so, in fact, that switching from a "turbo"/ Fat-Boy type muffler to a single Quiet Pack actually improved the driving experience, IMHO, as it dampened the exhaust note a little bit which allowed me to hear more of the IDAs.

Which is why I like the stock muffler on my '71 911, because it enables me to hear the IDA-like Zeniths more.

I've got a open header turbo car it sounds great to me, but I still like the sound of a well tuned n/a car better.

That being said, for the reasons noted above, Conklin's Turbo '67 sounds bad ass. More "top fuel V8" than anything German. Guten Himmel! Shocked

My 1.5 cents.

I like it! I can't hear your turbo very much, mine whistles loud. What makes some whistle louder than others?

great topic..
mY .02c..

I absolutly love the sound of my 2276 race motor.
12.6/1, IDA's with 44 vents. Ti valves, 2" header.
Runs consistent 11.80's in my superbeetle drag car.
I love the way I can hit the key and she's idleing right away, perfect lope too. Wuuump, Wuuump, Wummp, pocketa, pocketa, pocketa, Wuuump, wuuump, wuuump.
for some reason I love the way a well tuned N/A race motor idles. I have been listening to them most of my life.
To me, the idle is as important as any sound. That's the one folks hear when you cruise up to staging lanes and check out your ride.
It's a matter of pride and showing that I have a well tuned motor.
Instant throttle respons too.
It sounds all mean and Loud, but really it's a pussy cat to drive aroun the pits.  The Loudness lets folks know what's up...
Ready at a tap of the throttle...

Now... Last season, I installed my new 2332cc Turbo motor. It's over-cammed, and very large intake. It runs10.80's on 13psi (so far).
And I love every pass the car makes.
However, the idle sucks due to big cam and large intake. The midrange is super soggy. Crusing around the pits sounds mean as hell, but is a super bitch to drive.

But, going down the track, it's always more quiet than my competition, so not many can enjoy that sound.
Sounds great inside the car thou...
I have kind of associated "going fast" with "turbo sound" That I have learned to love it..

But ....I still think I'm partial to the sound of a well tuned, N/A high compression, IDA motor.

Even though I am a turbo guy, I ran carbs for many years. I like the sound of both but honestly, my taste for open stingers has disappeared. Kinda annoying to me now, lol.

I have a copy of the older Gene Berg "home videos" VHS tape which includes footage of some old races.  The best parts are watching the Black '67 Berg car racing down the track piloted by Gary.   There are both exterior and interior videos - kind of primitive but the sound of that Berg motor with the modified IDA's and large I.D. exhaust is amazing every time I watch it.

I don't know but the in-car video was LOUD, especially after Gary messed up the tranny on multiple runs.  The trans was whining so bad you couldn't hear the engine shut down at the end of the run.

I prefer the smooth powerfull sound of a set of IDA's on a good race motor more than the all the turbo's I heard up to now , allthough Turbo can be faster (when they run well).
And I don't see myself going to work with a turboed bug !

I Love the sound of IDAs over turbo anyday, and thats my opinion.
I've never owned a turbo powered bug but heard quite a few. I got my first set of 48 IDAs from "Claudes Buggies" (yep its been a while), back then the whole kit, with manifolds and linkage was a whopping $350.00. Love the sound when you rev 'em up and especially love that sound coupled with a Gene Berg early 1.48 close ratio 3rd gear at about 3000 rpms when the gear is singing/whining and then nail it.
