Hey gang! It has been a while since I have been on the forum and I hope you are all doing well. I just wanted to give you an update on the SLOVAL. The car had not seen the street or strip since Carlsbad closed about 2 years ago. I guess you could say I was pretty depressed when our home track closed. The car has been in a slumber until last week. I popped the motor out and ran it over to some good friends of mine at VW PARADISE to get freshened up. I told them that there was a race/show at Barona that a local car club(The LIFTERS) puts on. (I know these guys from the rat rod scene and hang out with them at local cruise nights.) They invited me to their race/show thinking I would bring out my rat. I had other ideas. This was the motivation I needed to get the Sloval back on the road. Kris had the motor back to me in three days. With the motor in the car, I jambed back over to the PARADISE to have Kris give it the Lauffer tune up. This is Friday before the race. Now the butterflies in my stomach start waking up. I loaded the car up behind my old 55 chevy p.u. and beat up old trailer. Saturday could not get here soon enough. Saturday 8:00 a.m. I hear Jason Riech roll up in front of my house in his caddy powered Model A roadster. He asks me if we were ready to show the Rat Rodders what VW's are all about? "YEP" I replied. We bombed up to Barona and parked over with the LIFTER car club. It was the only bug there and to be honest, my p.u. was getting more attention than the bug. That was all to change very shortly. I unloaded the car and a few of the rodders were wandering what that whining noise was and what's a SLOVAL? I just said the car is probably hurt and is on the verge of breaking. First pass the car ran well. I headed back to the pits and had few curious on-lookers. Second pass I raced a channeled roadster with a healthy small block chevy. The guy in the roadster did not want to race, but after being heckled by track officials the guy fell victim to the pressure. We raced - he lost. I gave the roadster at least 3 cars and drove around him. Yes!, the Sloval is back! I went back to the pits and now everyones curiousity is at a peak. What the hell is in that thing? Just a 2liter, I replied. I put the stinger on the car and went up for what was to be the last pass of my day. I pulled up behind a friend's wicked chopped Model A that has a small block chevy, 4-48 IDA intake all slicked down. He was to race a real bad early chevy coupe on a slick with a dual quad tunnel ram motor. We watched this car annihilate other cars all day. Ben new he was going to be this guys next victim. I asked Ben if he wanted me to race the coupe with the bug. Ben said he would set it up. The guy in the coupe reluctantly agreed to race even though it was just a bug. It was on guys. We lined up, did our burnouts and staged. I new this was the race of the day. I launched the SLOVAL like I never have before, grabbed 2nd and ripped the shift knob off the shifter! OH CRAP! I threw the shift knob in the passenger seat and grabbed 3rd. I new the coupe was right next to me but he just couldn't pass. We won the match of the day with a bug. I ended up cutting a light on the guy and stayed out on him. What a race! 7.52@90 to a 7.57@ 89. I had my friends in the stands tell me the crowd went nuts when we got the win light. As I criused back to the pits I got thumbs up , knods of approval and respect from everyone even the guy with the bad little chevy we raced. When I parked the car was swarmed with hot rodders in disbelief. I got so many hand shakes I felt like I should be running for congress. All in all it was an awesome day. I am just so amped up about this I wanted to let you know we made a few more believers last weekend. Best part of all is I drove the car to breakfast Sunday morning just as I had some 2 plus years ago. CHEERS GANG AND VIVA LA VW

Hey Guys, just in case you want to see some pics, head over to the Samba and check out the gallery in the Oval window section and see the pics i took of the Sloval in action. I have to say that the car has never run better and it sure reminded me of the times i enjoyed the car myself. My hat is off to Russ. what a great day man and watchign you run those times got us all excited! Yes, the Sloval is back and it is bad! The best part of the weekend was rolling up to Russ's house on Sunday morning and seeing him fire up the Sloval and roll with me to breakfast. It was a great time. Watch this car as it will only get better!!!!

Thats cool there are a lot of nonbelievers out there . My girl freinds dads redoing his first car he hot rodded in the fifties its a 31 Ford . It had been sitting in there barn/shop for years its good to see its going to see the road again. When we talk cars he always has that nonbeleiver look on .Im thinking when we both finaly finish are cars we can go for a cruize and he can get a good look at my tail lights . Brian

Yea, the SLOVAL! Will never forget being at Knollwoods at the Classic in 00 or 01 and hearing/seeing the sloval roll in to the parking lot with the straight cuts whining away........ That car sure pulls the attention away from all others!

HEY RUSTY !!!!!
How ya doin' Man? Good the hear the Sloval is out of Hibernation, that car used to scare the crap out of me, I'll never forget the Street Legal Drags at the "Q" when you took me for the ride, gave the 5.slow Stang about 4 car lengths (this is the 1/8 MILE, people) dropped the hammer, went sideways, used that slow-ass stock shifter to hammer 2nd, drove around the Stang, and got to the end. And the "pass" in front of the DQ in Fullerton... one of the BEST, Rusty, one of the BEST....
