No matter what you did, something didn't work out right until you walked away, ate something or got some sleep.
For me, I had one hell of a time getting my first car started after installing the engine (I bought the car with the engine out). The '66 Bug still had a stock 1300 with 6V electrics, so the Douglas brand battery wasn't worth a crap while cranking extended periods. I had help from some friends and we worked on it for about a week, even towing it behind a pickup and dumping the clutch in 2nd gear. I got tired of re-charging the battery every day, so we connected a 12V battery directly to the starter - still nothing.
Plenty of gas and spark - but it just wouldn't start. In desperation, I had the mechanic neighbor look at it while I cranked the engine. In less than 2 minutes, he had it running. Someone had installed the distributor drive 180 degrees out of phase, so he just switched some plug wires and it fired right up!

Just last week, car was running like trash, even after a tuneup... was about to open up the carbs, etc. when a buddy suggested I check the timing (I'd checked it a few weeks ago and re-adjusted it)... checked it the next morning and it was 15 degrees too far behind.... DUH!!

About a month ago, me and my wife were just riding around one day(for 300+ miles) and my volksrod/bug wouldnt crank as we started to head home. I checked the battery cable ends, switch but still nothing. I rolled it off and away we went. Went through a drive thru and stopped to gas up and left it idleing. Next morning i was swapping out the starter but still nothing. I had power on the silinoid small wire but not when pluged on the starter. after searching for a while,I found the male/female connector at the fuse box. Unplugged it and gave it a quick look and plugged it back up and it cranked over and fired right up. I clean the connection and been fine since. Tim

Shoulda gone with my gut and took the belt off.......

Ditto on Farmington. Was having traction issues all day. Lowering tire pressure, adding boost and higher launches and got my best mph. Then had a bye and still went for it. Missed 2nd, then got it then felt boost drop, heard a rumble and shut it down THEN looked in rearview mirror and I pulled a Batman smoke screen. So sorry for the late day oil down

At the 2009 DDDay at Bitburg , on Saturday morning , as I made a rolling burn I heard a dry snapping sound comming on to the dry rubber ... drive axle broken . Then you experience how boring it can be watching other people dragrace all weekend !

Start the bug and back it out of the garage. Stick it in neutral and get out to close the garage door. Walking back the car dies. Won't start. pop the hood and start in looking at everything. Go in the house to change so I can get dirty. While under the car pulling the fuel filter the light comes on! I didn't hear the fuel pump buzzing when I turned the key! Flip the switch under the dash and the ace mechanic heads back to the house to clean up. "What was the problem with the bug, dear?" "Oh, electrical glitch!" I tell my wife.

Replacing the engine in a bug. All 4 corners on jack stands. Get irritated and give the engine one more good bump to get it to go back together. Watch as the car, engine, floor jack and 4 jack stands do a special little dance as they head for the flower bed and land in a twisted, wretched heap. I only had one floor jack & it was under the car. It was rush hour and lines of cars stopped and rolling by had front row seats for the show.
And, let us not forget the time somebody left paper towels in all of the exhaust ports when firing off a new buggy engine. Tri-mil stingers make excellent launchers for flaming paper towels. Slack-jawwed amazement for the fellow who stopped by to watch me fire off the engine for the first time.

Nice... would it have stopped a thief as well as it stopped the owner?

My first time using bolt on valve covers and the bolts came off on the freeway at 55mph and all my oil came out before I could stop and check it. I wen tow it home and checked it and burn bearings and my 78.4 Okrassa crank was hstory and my 5.7 rods burn. Now I have a 90x94. What a excuse to get a new engine. DUH.

I was dumb enough to buy a cheap, generic, buggy shifter box for my drag car. It has been fine for the last 2 years until last weekend at Englishtown. In the semi's, the other car cut a .5-something reaction time to my .0-something. He had over a second head start. I was by him halfway through third gear and had the win in the bag. Reached for fourth gear......nothing! OH NO! Kept trying and just couldn't get it back in gear. Then he went by again and won by about .4 seconds. The box actually bent back about 20 degrees and caused the shifter ball to pull up out of the socket in the shift rod instead of moving it forward. This winter I will be making my own out of 1/4" steel!!
So in summary, my duh moment was actualy thinking I could buy ONE part and put it right in and have it not fail.

I kind of had the same thing happen to me in my old chassis car. At the local bracket race in footbrake class. I was in the semi's and when I shifted to 3rd, the whole shifter box welds broke and I tried everything to get in gear but I just coasted to a stop so I could pull the shift rod into 1st and idle back to the pits. My brother was laughing when I pulled up holding the shifter and box up. I made a better box and brace for it and it was nice and solid. Tim

While having both rear wheels removed from my bug and adjusting the weber idf's my then 4 and 5 year old children kept hammering me for attention. I put the rear wheels back on the disk rotors and hand tightened the bolts. Sadly i was totally distracted by my children i forgot to tighten the bolts fully and drove off down the road with my 5 year old son in the back seat. I felt an unsusual vibration from the rear then total shock came over me and i pulled over quickly and found the rear wheel held on with only 3 bolts and loose.Out came the jack and socket set and a slow but direct drive home. My excuse tothe wife.....had to adjust the carbs a little more...

OK Y'all...this could be the best of the best (sad but true) I'm at Darlington Dragway for the IHRA bracket finals, 2001-2002 (I tried to forget).. There are over 1200 cars there with 1 Bug (ME)! So I'm there, nervous as HELL, trying to represent my hometown track, Mountaineer Dragway from Grandview WV, as well as every VW on the planet. First time run, car runs low 8's! ( She was a consistant 8:30s car at the time) I'm PROUD!!! (never saw so many games of punch bug in my life) So I'm back in the pits, checking plugs, carb jets, etc etc. I go to the line for my 2nd time run and she falls on her face...pop pop only firing on 3. We rush back to the pits, can not figure out the problem and go up for the 3rd time run. Same Thing!! Getting ready for 1st round elimenations..panic time..A buddy suggest we pull the carbs to check for anything wierd, and Lo an Behold on the 1-2 side lies the shop rag I forgot to pull off, stuck in the #1 intake, sucked straight through the carb!! Duh-Huh! There you have it! can you say Dumb Ass?

Friday afternoon, after work, my brother stopped to take a pair of beers with his friends before going home. Lots of hi performance and muscle cars in the parking.
Time to go home. My bro turned on the engine of his Jetta and decided to give his co-workers a taste of VW power. The street is clean of cars and cops; clutch down, 6,500 revs on the tach an then... the car was in reverse!!! He hit a concrete wall. Then he leave the "zero-zone" ashamed and with the trunk open.
PS - Audi TT of his supervisor was near his beloved Jetta; six inches more and bye bye TT -and maybe his promotion-.
