I have been invited to go look at a split window bug shell on Saturday. (no you can't come too).
I don't know much about the early bugs.
It's a mostly solid shell (no pan). Looks like some 1/4 panel repair is in order, other than that it looks fairly solid. I only have one partial photo, I will get a better look on Saturday. No fenders.. Just a shell.
Anyone with any advice is welcome.
What to look for?
any idea what it may be worth?

If I put it on a IRS pan and did my own mix-mash of parts.... Would that be blasphemy?

Stick it on a tube chassis and put that turbo motor in it!
To hell with the purists! If all that is there is a shell, do
what you want!

Damn Tom --- you lucky bastard -- I've been looking for a split shell for over 2 years and they have gotten stupid in price (minimun $4000 for a rusted out hulk) -- I was wanting to put it on a IRS pan with my big turbo motor -- I say screw the purist and do what you want -- I mean if it was totally complete I wouldn't cut one up, but where your just getting the shell -- go for it --- --- Just remember if your wanting to keep the interior stockish all the little parts are going to be expensive. I really think you should buy it and give it to me and I'll give you my oval minus engine and call it a great deal for both of us LOL. Body work is body work just be ready to do work on it

No.  You're only looking at the body.  If you decide to buy it, you're "saving the body".  If it was a complete car, then yes, you might be crossing some sort of line (for some).  If you get only the body, IMO, you're entitled to put it on any chasis you want (including a tube chasis drag car   Grin).

Yeah, the older you go, the price goes up exponentially. For a body shell in good condition, I'd say you'd be in the $4K to $6K range. For one that needs a good bit of rust repair $2K to $4K. Like everyone else, if you just have the body, do what you want. I personally wouldn't modify any sheet metal, like cutting up the luggage tray for a hidden turbo, or trans raise, but that's me. Like fiatdude mentioned, any stock type parts that you may need for any originallity are going to be well in the stratosphere in price. Just the semaphores, tail lights, and dash components alone that are correct for the car can run you upwards of $2K to $3K. That's not including the $1K+ for a pair of Split Bumpers, but it's all in how original you would want it. Type in "split" in the search section in the classifieds on thesamba, and see what type of parts, and prices you find. Not everyone gets what they're asking, but some of the parts ARE worth what they're asking.

P.S. If you do decide to put a one piece front end on it, and make it into a race car, I'll give you $500 for the front quarters!

Tom Hansen up in Seattle did this a few years ago.  Put it on a '71 pan I believe with a very big engine. Pretty cool.  Just don't cut it up, they look cool just the way they are...

The visit to the look at the split window as a bust.
They guy needs to see a doctor for his Hoarding addiction.
Everything was an on-going project that he planed on finishing..... some
day.
You can tell stuff has been sitting arond for about the last 20yrs.
Everything was rusted bad.
Probably 30 motor laying around, not a one was free rotation. Rusted real
bad. He thought they were gold.

I did manage to find most of the parts to put the split window back
together, but it was NOT FOR SALE.
He also had a beautiful 64 that was fresh from paint... 10yrs ago. Just
sitting in the back with stuff plied all over it. No way to get it out of
the garage as there are 3 other junk trucks on axles blocking the driveway.
Nothing is gonna move from that junk pile until he dies.
It was really sad to see all the stuff going to rot.

I couldn't even get him to sell me a $10 tail light, "Naaa, I'm gonn use
that for something"....

I went home w/o one single item. 1 1/2hr drive didn't matter...

Too bad. At least you'll know to watch for that auction someday.

That's the  problem. While working at Jim's, I have gathered dozens of horror stories of such instances. All but a few of them have ended with the person passing away, and the person that inherits the stuff ends up PAYING a salvage yard to come dispose of the stuff. Thousands, and in some cases tens of thousands of dollars of VW parts have been scrapped while the ignorant owners of the stuff payed someone to scrap it. I got screwed out of a 57 Ghia in which I offered the guy a $1000 for. He didn't think that was enough, and didn't want to sell it. So when the township gave him 24 hours to remove it from the property it was on, he paid a slavage yard $250 to take it away. The yard crushed it later that day.

All I can say is keep the contact information, and "politely" keep "bugging" the person about buying it. This is the only way I have ever heard of someone getting something off of a horder. If they get into a rough time, and need money, if you happen to contact them at the opportune moment, they're willing to sell.

You haven't been studying your American Pickers Episodes! You should have offered him $30 for the $10 tail light to "break the ice".
