finished it today.  3 days of intense 3 hour days will really move a project forward.  the pan had developed surface rust under the crappy coating that the PO had done before i sent it to john.  it looked fine then so we didn't blast and paint the pan.  i used some wire wheels and scrapers to get to the rusty medal.  i then coated it with Conquest and let it dry over night.  then i rolled on some Rust-o-leum.  good enough for me.  new tranny, mounts, TO bearing, and sidewinder exhaust.  new 195 60 15's on the rear that match the 145 continentals.  new wheels with ISP West detailed center caps.  new Hella headlight rings.  new shortened t bars.  solid color now.  i like the look a lot better.  here are a ton of pics.  (i was going to paint the whole car but it didn't work with my schedule or david's so i only got to lay down some base on the removables.)

Thanks for posting the pics...beautiful resto job!  Another vintage 40-year-old Beetle returned to glory Smiley

One question...is it really a '70 with later fenders?  Looks good regardless...

it is.  i had the fenders and the taillights so i used them.  i don't like the 68-72 taillights and the 67 down would have required aprons and hoods and too many other changes.  so i used the really fat chick fenders!
